DARE Project: The Canadian Homeowners’ Problem: Should I take a Reverse Mortgage?

I learned how to work independently while conducting academic research, gathering and interpreting data from a wide range of sources, and presenting my findings in a concise and accessible manner. I also learned flexibility as the scope and direction of the project evolved over the course of the research.
Project Description:
My project examined how reverse mortgages can be applied in financial planning, and the family and financial situations in which they may be beneficial. I gathered and analyzed data from government agencies, financial institutions, and academic literature. I researched reverse mortgage products, housing trends, demographic data, and household living costs faced by Canadian seniors. From there, I identified family and financial situations where a reverse mortgage is a feasible option, along with viable alternatives.The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
