Bratty was the recipient of an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, during the third fall convocation ceremony on Oct. 18, and the first of two convocations for LAPS.
Born in 1932 in Toronto, and raised by Italian immigrants, Bratty shared his own journey of education, and the advice from his father that led him on a path of lifelong learning.
鈥淚 suppose it all started about 70 years ago when I finished high school,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 told my dad that I wanted to build houses and be a developer and be a small builder, and he said 鈥榥o鈥, in his broken English 鈥 he said 鈥榶ou go school鈥. I said, 鈥楧ad, I want to be a builder鈥, and he said 鈥榶ou go school鈥.
鈥淪o, I had two choices: I go to school or I go to school.鈥
He went to school, earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree, and went back to his father for advice. He told him, again, how he wanted to be a developer. His father told him, again, 鈥測ou go school.鈥

At that time, Bratty recalls having more 鈥渁cceptance about going to school鈥. His father suggested he become a professional 鈥 a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant 鈥 and use his Italian background to help the huge wave of immigrants coming over from Europe at that time.
鈥淪o I became a lawyer,鈥 he said, and obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School before being called to the bar in 1957. Eventually, he was appointed Queen鈥檚 Counsel in 1970.
鈥淚nterestingly enough, it is 60 years now that I鈥檝e been a lawyer. My firm still exists, we busy as heck 鈥 and I鈥檓 extremely proud of it.鈥
鈥淓ducation is so important,鈥 he said during the convocation ceremony. 鈥淓ducation breeds intelligence, intelligence breeds understanding and understanding breeds resolution.鈥
He also expressed deep gratitude to 91亚色 for the honorary degree, saying he would 鈥渟erve its purpose well鈥.
Bratty is referred to as 鈥楾he Man Who Built Toronto鈥, and his name is synonymous with real estate development in Southern Ontario and indeed throughout Canada. He is also a notable philanthropist, and has supported Toronto鈥檚 cultural communities for decades.
