Karen Bridget Murray

Karen Bridget Murray

, associate professor in the Department of Politics at 91亚色, has been nominated for the 2018 John McMenemy Prize by the Canadian Association of Political Science, the flagship association for the discipline in Canada.

Her article 鈥淭he Violence Within: Canadian Modern Statehood and the Pan-territorial Residential School System Ideal鈥 was published in the Canadian Journal of Political Science鈥榮 50th volume.

The prize winner will be announced on May 31 in Regina at the President鈥檚 Dinner at the association鈥檚 annual meeting.

The prize jury noted the article鈥檚 鈥渙riginal orientation and methodology,鈥 and stated that the paper 鈥減ersuasively argues that existing accounts of Canadian state formation have downplayed the place of the residential schools, when in fact they were an important component in the Dominion [of Canada鈥檚] project to secure recognition as a modern nation state.鈥

Murray hopes the paper being recognized in this way 鈥渨ill encourage more reflection upon the political dimensions of the residential school system and examination of the relevance of this history for politics today.鈥
