91亚色 Assistant Professor Gerald Bareebe聽participated in a panel discussion on The Agenda.聽
Bareebe discussed the present and future of Uganda as it approaches its 50th anniversary since Idi Amin seized power. Bareebe noted many Ugandans expected the country鈥檚 Jan 2021 election to be troublesome. He noted safety, security and voter fraud were particular areas of concern.
According to Bareebe, there have been mass arrests of opposition supporters following the election. In addition, the opposition have challenges accessing Ugandan media to advance their arguments. COVID-19 safety protocols adopted by the government also made it more difficult for the opposition to rally their supporters. Notably, there was a generational gap in voting preferences: many of Uganda鈥檚 youth supported the popular opposition leader Bobi Wine.
Bareebe is a former reporter at The Daily Monitor, Uganda鈥檚 largest independent newspaper.
