Department of English presents Anakana Schofield

Anakana Schofield is the author of the acclaimed, Giller Prize–shortlisted novel Martin John (2015), which was also a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, the Goldsmiths Prize in the UK, a New 91ŃÇÉ« Times Editors’ Choice, and named a best book of the year by The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, National Post, Sunday Business Post, Toronto Star, and The Irish Times, among others. Her debut novel Malarky (2012) won the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, the Debut-Litzer Prize for Fiction in the United States and was a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Bina, her most recent book, was shortlisted for the Goldsmith’s Prize. The New 91ŃÇÉ« Times called it “a bitterly funny novel but one that carries moral weight” while Katy Waldman wrote in The New 91ŃÇÉ«er: “Bina makes for great company; her obstinacy, like Bartleby’s, is flecked with heroic resistance.” Kirkus Reviews called the book a “masterwork that should cement Bina (and Schofield) as one of the great voices in recent fiction.” Schofield’s writing and reviews have appeared in The Guardian, The Irish Times, and The Globe and Mail, among others. She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Anakana will lead a close reading in EN 3610 Intermediate Prose Workshop of her story “Beneath the Taps: A Testimonial.” Attendees are welcome to and ask Anakana questions of their own about her process, intention, meaning, craft, etc., as well as more general questions about her work.
