Starkie Mak is a multi-faceted artist experienced in the realms of visual art, illustration, teaching art, writing, and poetry, as well as having a deep-seated respect for literature. Upon moving from Hong Kong to Toronto in 2018, she was motivated to create a story highlighting notions of trust, courage, and love. She is of the mindset that art has the ability to effectively convey powerful messages both implicitly and explicitly; such messages have often been heavily influenced by the classic stories and books encountered in her early life. As an homage to literature's importance, she has implemented it into her art.
Parting with family and friends is one of the most difficult obstacles in life, especially when one has no choice but to leave quickly and unexpectedly. This book chronicles my journey of processing grief and keeping an optimistic outlook. In sharing my story, I hope to provide a glimpse into the emotional experience of migrants and those similar to my situation. This book uniquely blends Asian calligraphy, as expressed with a Japanese brush, with my own drawing style, offering an original and engaging narrative.
