
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has been criticized for an advertisement that appeared in the community newspaper The Oscar on May 5. Ottawa prohibits the use of the city’s resources to be used to produce advertisements for election-related purposes. However, the Mayor’s Office has defended the ad, saying it’s routine communication.ÌýÂ
Ian Stedman, associate professor of Canadian public law and governance at 91ÑÇɫ’s School of Public Policy & Administration, shared his views in the article. Stedman said while the behaviour is not breaking any current rules as they are written, they may need to be reconsidered to create a fairer playing field when it comes to campaigning.
Stedman holds a PhD in law from Osgoode Hall Law School. His research interests include law and justice, science and technology, public sector ethics and accountability, as well as AI.
