An article in EDM Tunes recently shared that Wiggle Room, a Toronto venue known for late-night dance parties, has banned smart glasses to help protect patrons' privacy and ensure guests feel safe from being recorded unknowingly.

In the article, associate professor Natalie Coulter says that the growing presence of recording technologies in public spaces is limiting many young people’s sense of freedom. She notes the possibility of photos or videos being captured and shared on social media can make young people more inhibited and less able to engage openly in public life.

Coulter is the Director of the Institute for Research on Digital Literacies (IRDL) and an associate professor of Communication & Media Studies at 91ÑÇɫ.  She is co-founder of the Girls Studies Research Network and her research explores the intricate technological, political and economic environments surrounding media production aimed at young audiences in Canada.
