Politics professor discusses BRICS climate agenda after recent meeting

Headshot of Gregory Chin

Gregory Chin, an associate professor in the Department of Politics, was quoted in an article for Devex regarding a meeting between the BRICS bloc, which recently took place in New Delhi. The BRICS bloc, founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has 11 full member countries and 10 partner countries which account for much of the world’s natural resources. BRICS has been discussing ways to become more climate resilient and less reliant on the U.S. dollar and Western institutions.

Chin says that because the U.S. has withdrawn development assistance, BRICS countries feel the need to come together to advance the climate agenda.

Chin’s research focuses on the political economy of international money and development finance, as well as on China, Asia, the BRICS and global governance, drawing on four decades of scholarship.
