Public policy professor comments on Brad Bradford’s tax cut pledge in Atinito

Headshot of Zachary Spicer

An article in Atinito examines mayoral candidate Brad Bradford’s recent pledge to scrap the Municipal Land Tax for home sales up to $1.1 million. This means that people buying a home will not be taxed on the first $1.1 million of the price.

Zachary Spicer, associate professor in the School of Public Policy & Administration, commented in the article that the proposal could spark broader discussions around the future of Toronto’s finances. While the land transfer tax generates significant revenue for the city, it has also made it increasingly difficult for homebuyers. Given the city’s limited revenue-generating tools, the proposal may prompt conversations about alternative sources of funding.

Spicer holds a PhD in political science from the University of Western Ontario. His research interests include politics and government, public administration, local government, smart cities, data governance and innovation policy.
