Prof. Jelena Zikic discusses career sacrifices as an outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic

SHRM Associate Professor, Jelena Zikic, wrote an article for The Globe and Mail titled, “Career sacrifice, especially during a pandemic, is never easy. Here’s how to make that decision”, discussing how pandemic measures have affected career aspirations and life outside of work.

“Many individuals have had to give up certain aspects of their careers or alter future plans. This conscious decision to give up career goals or to reshape and accommodate for work-life realities is defined as career sacrifice,” Zikic says, in the article.

SHRM Associate Professor was featured in an article for The Toronto Star, , where she discussed companies creating pet-friendly spaces for employees that are experiencing separation anxiety.

“There are different ways to be pet-friendly. It might not involve dogs at work, but having more flexible hours so owners can take their dogs for walks or maybe having a doggy daycare on site,” Ezzedeen explained, in the article.

SHRM Assistant Professor will be participating in an international seminar, , on May 4, 2022 from 9 a.m. EST.

BHRM alumna named as one of 91��ɫ’s 2022 Top 30 Alumni Under 30

91��ɫ has announced its list of Top 30 Alumni Under 30. The remarkable group of civically engaged young leaders are tackling complex societal challenges in a world facing a convergence of unprecedented trials, all before the age of 30.

School of Human Resources Management alumna, (BHRM ’17), was named in this year’s batch of outstanding alumni.

Durham is a senior recruiter, career coach, content creator and public speaker with a passion for making career education accessible. As a recruiter both in the finance and technology space, Emily connected with hundreds of candidates every week and noticed that people early in their careers often felt ill-equipped to answer common interview questions and struggled with the application process.

To help prepare candidates for their interviews, Emily began to produce and host The Straight Shooter Recruiter podcast, offering step-by-step support for job seekers. With the growth of the podcast, Emily expanded her mission of demystify all things careers to Instagram and TikTok with a reach of 3+ million. Most recently, Emily has been featured in The Financial Post, Bay Street Bull, Narcity and Canadian Business Magazine for her work around career education.

Launched in 2021, 91��ɫ’s Top 30 Alumni Under 30 program seeks to highlight the success and diversity of the University’s alumni community, while inspiring the next generation of young alumni leaders to make a positive difference locally and globally.

SHRM Associate Professor was featured in an article for the Toronto Star, , where she discussed how evolving aspects of work, including commuting, can be seen as a “Great Renegotiation” between employees and employers.

“All this amount of commuting that we did pre-pandemic, for the most part (employees) assumed the cost thereof. Now there’s a greater likelihood that we’re going to renegotiate the cost of that commute,” she said, in the article.

The article explores how unionizing will affect Uber drivers and what the implications of unionizing could be down the line.

“It’s a bad look for a union to enter into a secret top-down agreement with a company for worker representation rights without disclosing the terms of the agreement to the very workers affected,” Doorey says in the article.
