Religious Studies Essay Prizes

Every year the Religious Studies program awards two prizes for the best essays written in Religious Studies courses in the past year. Now that the semester is over, I want to encourage you to consider submit your work to be considered for the prizes.

The William R. Coleman Prize: This book prize is offered to the student who has written the best essay in a religious studies course offered on the Keele Campus. It is awarded for courses completed in the previous fall/winter and summer session. Established to honour Professor William R. Coleman upon his retirement from the Department of Humanities. An inspired teacher, he served as a model of the interdisciplinary approach highly valued at 91��ɫ. (Required Courses: 3000 or 4000 level Religious Studies course)

The Becky Lee Religion and Gender Essay Prize: This prize is awarded in the Fall term to an outstanding paper on the subject of Religion and Gender submitted for grading in a Religious Studies course in the previous academic year.

The deadline for submitting your essay is July 1st. We will announce the winners at our Religious Studies event in September.

Religion and Childhood: A Modest (Course) Proposal

The Religious Studies Program presents a talk with Prof. Gurbir Jolly of the Children, Childhood, and Youth Studies program. The title of the talk is “Religion and Childhood: A Modest (Course) Proposal.” As with other events in the RESTtalks series, the presentation will be filmed and posted on the Religious Studies website. A Q&A session will follow. The event will take place on March 13 in Room 305 in Founders College, 2:30-3:30 pm. Refreshments will be served.

RESTtalk lecture with Prof. Marc Herman

The Religious Studies Program presents a talk with Marc Herman, professor of medieval Judaism, on “The Oral Torah in the Islamic West.” Prof. Herman joined the Humanities faculty last year, so this event will be the perfect opportunity to get to know Marc and his work. As with other events in the RESTtalks series, the presentation will be filmed and posted on the Religious Studies website. A Q&A session will follow. The event will take place on February 13 in the Senior Common Room (010 Vanier College), 2:30-3:30 pm. Refreshments will be served.

The RESTtalk series was launched in 2019 but was suspended with the closing of campus in February 2020. Previous lectures in the series can be viewed on the RESTtalks web page.

Future speakers in the series: Gurbir Jolly (March 13).

RESTtalk lecture with Prof. Tony Burke

The Religious Studies Program presents the first lecture in the second season of the RESTtalks lecture series. Tony Burke, professor of Early Christianity, will speak on "Cursing Jesus." The short talk will be filmed and posted on the Religious Studies website. A Q&A session will follow. The event will take place on January 30 in the Senior Common Room (010 Vanier College), 2:30-3:30 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Congratulations to Christopher Bauer and Elaine Slonim for winning the LA&PS Writing Prize at both the third- and fourth-year level! At the third-year level, Christopher Bauer won for his essay "When Myth Meets the Moment: How the Ancient Greek Tragedians Constructed the Age of Heroes to Explore Their Contemporary Society". And Elaine Slonim won at the fourth-year level for her essay "Ovid’s Epistulae ex Ponto: Letters as Poems, Poems as Gifts".

"Walking the Marathon" Lecture with Matthew Sears, Thursday, Sept. 29 at 4:30

The road to Marathon, the 42 kilometers between the center of Athens and the site of the battle of 490 BCE against an expedition of the Persian Empire, was the course taken by the first modern marathon race in 1896, and continues as the route of the Athens Classic Marathon each fall. In antiquity, too, the route was revered. Evidence from cult sites to conspicuous funerary monuments suggest that ancient Athenians travelled the road to Marathon as a sort of pilgrimage to remember the battle, pay respects to the fallen, and coopt some of Marathon’s legacy for themselves.

Join us Thursday September 29 for an upcoming lecture here at 91��ɫ by Matthew Sears of the University of New Brunswick, who is doing the Classical Association of Canada Lecture Tour this Fall. Professor Sears is the author of Understanding Greek Warfare (2019), Battles and Battlefields of Ancient Greece: A Guide to their History, Topography and Archaeology (co-author with C. Jacob Butera) (2019), and Athens, Thrace and the Shaping of Athenian Leadership (2013).

The talk will be in-person on THURSDAY, SEPT. 29^th at 4:30 pm in the History Common Room, VH 2183 and virtually through Zoom.
