The donation enhances and expands student services and supports for 91亚色鈥檚 top-ranked JD/MBA jointly delivered by Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business

In recognition of a transformational $6 million gift from The Hennick Family Foundation, 91亚色 has named the unique program of supports and services in their honour. The Hennick JD/MBA provides enhanced scholarship and world-class learning experiences, further elevating the joint program鈥檚 reputation and student outcomes.

鈥淥n behalf of 91亚色, I extend heartfelt thanks to Jay and Barbara Hennick for their visionary philanthropy and their enduring commitment to the Schulich School of Business and Osgoode Hall Law School over more than two decades,鈥 says President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. 鈥淣aming this exceptional program after the Hennicks reflects their commitment, as well as that of the University, to ensure that future leaders in business and law are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values they need to drive meaningful and positive change in the world.鈥

Jay and Barbara Hennick are prominent Canadian business leaders and philanthropists whose impact spans the fields of health care, education, and the arts. Together, they are the founders of The Hennick Family Foundation, established in 2008 to support charitable initiatives that reflect their family鈥檚 values and passions. The Foundation plays a vital role in advancing access and excellence in areas such as medical research, higher education, and cultural enrichment across Canada and around the world.

In recognition and support of the Hennicks鈥 generous donation, the University has also committed to matching a part of the funds with a further combined $2 million commitment from Osgoode, Schulich, and the University, bringing the total investment in the program to $8 million.

鈥淲e are delighted to have our name associated with such an iconic program as it approaches its 50th anniversary. By encouraging and supporting exceptional students to pursue a joint degree in business and law, we hope to broaden their perspectives and expand their career opportunities. This program will empower them to contribute meaningfully and prepare them to take on leadership roles in any field they choose,鈥 say Barbara and Jay Hennick.

The Hennick JD/MBA program combines the three-year Osgoode Hall Law School Juris Doctor (JD) law degree with the two-year Schulich School of Business Master of Business Administration (MBA) to create a four-year combined program. Graduates will receive a Hennick JD/MBA certificate in recognition of their dual degrees.

The joint program features a unique combination of courses to prepare students for the demands of leading-edge careers in business, law, public policy and a variety of fields in which the two disciplines intersect. More than 550 Osgoode/Schulich JD/MBA alumni hold positions of influence around the world 鈥 a testament to the exceptional training they have received.

鈥淲e are truly honoured by Jay and Barbara Hennick鈥檚 support, which will ensure that our internationally recognized JD/MBA program continues to thrive, allowing our students to pursue a wide range of career opportunities,鈥 says Trevor Farrow, Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School. 鈥淭his gift will strengthen recruitment and student support, expand programming and career mentorship, and foster further connections with our amazing alumni network across Canada and around the world. Building on current strengths, the Hennick JD/MBA program will provide students with the knowledge and perspective needed to lead in law, business, and society.鈥

鈥淭his investment propels the JD/MBA program forward, giving us the resources to expand, innovate, and attract top students whether in law or business,鈥 adds Detlev Zwick, Dean of the Schulich School of Business. 鈥淚t strengthens an already exceptional program and positions our graduates to make an even greater impact in the years ahead.鈥

鈥91亚色 is profoundly grateful to Scotiabank for their generous investment of $980,000 in support of the Lassonde School of Engineering. This contribution reflects the shared commitment of 91亚色 and Scotiabank to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields and to advancing the ground-breaking work of our researchers in the field of financial crime prevention,鈥 said Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of 91亚色. 鈥淚n recognition of this substantial investment, the fund that supports critical research in global financial crimes will be named the Scotiabank Lassonde Financial Crimes Research Initiative.鈥

Part of the gift will also include a flexible fund which will provide $10,000 over four years to support programs at Lassonde School to help support emerging initiatives or to create future opportunities.

鈥淭hanks to the investment from Scotiabank, the K2I Academy was able to adapt programs to an online format during the COVID-19 pandemic,鈥 says Jane Goodyer, dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering. 鈥淜2I Academy was able to purchase specialized electronics and other learning materials that allowed students to participate from home at a time when many hands-on learning opportunities in STEM were cancelled or delayed. 听At Lassonde, we know how important it is to support students of all backgrounds. That鈥檚 why I am pleased we are collaborating with Scotiabank through a shared sense of purpose, determined to equip every student with the skills and values needed to succeed in STEM fields as they work toward a better future.鈥

Lassonde听School of Engineering鈥檚 Helen Carswell STEAM Program for Women will also receive funding over four years to support grade-10-and-11 students from marginalized neighbourhoods to participate in a unique summer work-integrated learning program of paid research related to the UN Sustainability Goals while also earning a high-school credit.听High school students in the program will work on research projects related to engineering and science under the guidance of undergraduate-research-assistant mentors, high school teachers and听Lassonde听faculty. TORONTO, Oct. 25, 2019 鈥 Art has always been a passion for Joan and Martin Goldfarb, and a significant part of their lives. Now they are contributing $5 million to build a new art gallery at 91亚色, to help others find their own passion through art.

The Joan and Martin Art Gallery of 91亚色 will be built on 91亚色鈥檚 Keele campus, a structure that will solidify the university鈥檚 commitment to the visual arts.

鈥淲e hope the gallery will be a gathering place for people from all walks of life and different backgrounds,鈥 says Joan Goldfarb. 鈥淲e hope it will inspire the general community to learn about visual arts and visual language.鈥

Martin Goldfarb echoes his wife鈥檚 sentiments, adding: 鈥91亚色 will be a place for people to come and experience art, as well as share ideas with their colleagues and professors.鈥

鈥淭his gift will provide funds to build and establish the Joan and Martin Goldfarb Art Gallery of 91亚色, which will create a focal point for the celebration of visual art to the benefit of communities within and beyond our campuses,鈥 said Rhonda L. Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of 91亚色.

The Goldfarbs previously invested $4.5 million in support of 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. The Martin Goldfarb Centre for Fine Arts has, for many years, provided students with a place to hone their skills, connect with one another and reimagine the future.

Having been involved in visual arts since they were young, the Goldfarbs know the power that art has.

鈥淎rt is everywhere,鈥 says Martin. 鈥淚t allows for creativity, new ways of expressing yourself, and new ways of thinking.鈥

鈥淎rt is something that everybody can experience,鈥 added Joan. 鈥淏ut the commonality of visual language provides an opportunity to make the world a better place for everyone.鈥

The university will leverage the Goldfarbs鈥 contribution with an additional $3 million toward the new gallery.

鈥淚 want to extend my deepest gratitude to Joan and Martin for their significant contributions that will strengthen and expand 91亚色鈥檚 leadership in the artistic and creative communities,鈥 said Lenton.

The new Joan and Martin Goldfarb Art Gallery of 91亚色 will be led by Jenifer Papararo, newly appointed Director/Curator.

TORONTO, May 26, 2016 鈥 The Mirkopoulos family of Cinespace Film Studios is providing 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) with a state-of-the-art facility for teaching, learning and creation using pioneering motion media technologies.

The generous $2.5 million gift from and the Mirkopoulos family has created a new 91亚色 AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace, embedded at the company鈥檚 Kipling Avenue Studio complex.

Located next to professional sound stages being used for major television and film productions, the AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace will offer students unparalleled experiential learning opportunities, with hands-on training in new media technologies as well as direct exposure to the industry they are preparing to join.

鈥淚 am delighted to acknowledge the incredible impact of this gift by the Mirkopoulos family, one of 91亚色鈥檚 most valued supporters,鈥 said Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor. 鈥淭he Mirkopoulos鈥 have been active and involved as alumni, donors and volunteers over many years, and this contribution reflects their deep commitment to the University and to providing our students with the best possible learning environments so they can become global leaders in their fields.鈥

Opening its doors to students this fall, the AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace features two studios comprising more than 6,500 square feet of working space, plus seminar rooms and a suite of smaller studios for enhanced future development.

The new facility will enable AMPD students to explore the creation, convergence and application of next-generation arts and entertainment media technologies, with a focus on moving image production including 3D stereoscopic cinema; virtual, augmented and mixed reality; interactive performance; gaming; interactive data visualization, and more.

The AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace comes equipped with 鈥檚 markerless motion capture technology OpenStage2, eliminating the need for the bodysuits and markers currently used for film animation 鈭 for example, to track how the actors are moving. With this unique markerless motion capture technology, 91亚色 students will be able to create 3D animations, design interactive games and simulations, and integrate virtual performers for dance and theatre productions, without complicated setups.

Cinespace president Steve Mirkopoulos, brother of the late Nick Mirkopoulos, who founded the first large-scale movie production facility in Canada in 1990, announced the donation with brother Larry and second-generation Cinespace family members Jim, Chrisoula, Mike and Jackie Mirkopoulos.听 Company vice president Jim Mirkopoulos said the gift came from the family鈥檚 desire to create a value-added experience for students. 鈥淧artnering with 91亚色 will also keep Cinespace at the forefront of future cinema and new digital entertainment media.听 Content creation is the new manufacturing in our economy, and we should be supporting it,鈥 he said.

Cinespace is the also the founding sponsor of CineSiege, an annual juried showcase of outstanding productions by 91亚色鈥檚 cinema and media arts students, now in its 14th year.听 The company鈥檚 longstanding support of AMPD鈥檚 rising young talent also includes several student awards.

鈥淭he Mirkopoulos Family and Cinespace Film Studios are kindred spirits to AMPD. They share our conviction that students are innovators and creative forces in their own right, and that they will graduate from 91亚色 uniquely equipped to lead in our increasingly competitive global economy,鈥 commented Shawn Brixey, Dean of 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. 鈥淲e are deeply grateful to the Mirkopoulos family who continue to champion this vision with remarkable energy and enthusiasm.鈥

The Mirkopoulos family鈥檚 gift is one of the largest made to the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design as part of 91亚色鈥檚 most ambitious fundraising effort to date, . The campaign is more than halfway to its goal of $500 million in commitments to mobilize new ways of thinking, prepare engaged global citizens and build stronger communities.
