June 1, 2026, TORONTO – Birthed from a 1969 uprising as a response to police violence at a New 91��ɫ City dive bar called the Stonewall Inn, Pride has grown into a global movement, with Toronto-area celebrations among the largest in the world. Drawing on years of community-engaged research and large-scale data sets, 91��ɫ researchers are available to talk to media about historical struggles and current issues facing those in 2SLGBTQIA+ communities today.

Antony Chum

Prof. Antony Chum

(he/him, they/them) is the Canada Research Chair in Population Health Data Science and an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Health Science, Faculty of Health. His research focuses on LGBTQ+ health disparities and the structural determinants of health among marginalized populations, such as low-income, racialized, and gender-diverse groups. By applying quasi-experimental approaches to large-scale population datasets drawn from Census, linked health administrative, and international sources, Chum generates population-level evidence on how structural barriers and public policies shape health and related social and economic outcomes.

��ܳ�’s , "Beyond the Gender Binary: Wage Inequality and Occupational Segregation among Transgender and Nonbinary Workers," utilizes data from the 2021 Canadian Census, the first national census in the world to collect and identify data on transgender and nonbinary individuals. The study found significant employment and wage gaps, with transgender and nonbinary individuals being eight to 14 per cent less likely to be employed than cisgender men and earn 20 to 30 per cent lower hourly wages on average. Even after adjusting for demographic, occupational, and industrial factors, a substantial earnings gap remains, hitting nonbinary individuals assigned female at birth the hardest.

Prof. Jin Haritaworn

Jin Haritaworn

is an expert of gay imperialism, homonationalism and pinkwashing. They have studied the gentrification and securitization of the Church-Wellesley Village and look critically at the incorporation of Pride into the neoliberal city. They also explore queer of colour maps and counter-archives. Haritaworn is Associate Professor of Gender, Race and Environment in the Faculty of Environment and Urban Change. They locate their work in the tradition of activist scholarship, which attempts to be in the service of communities. Their research deals with landscapes that are shaped by racial and colonial capitalism, where celebration and incorporation exist alongside pathologization and criminalization. Their first two books, and , explore how certain mixed-race and LGBT subjects became desirable in a context of war on terror, neoliberal multiculturalism and the global city in London and Berlin.

Tom Hooper

Prof. Tom Hooper

(he/him) is a historian of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in Canada and a professor with the department of equity studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS). His research includes exploring the 1981 bathhouse raids in Toronto where more than three hundred gay men were arrested and criminally charged for their sexuality, with a focus on the community resistance to these raids both on the streets and in the courts. Hooper critically examined the construction of dominant queer historical narratives, including the myth that legal changes in 1969 represented the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada. Hooper also investigated the use and misuse of heritage grants provided to 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations.

Prof. Nick Mulé

Nick Mulé

(he/him) is a professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies and the School of Social Work, LA&PS. He teaches sexual activism, and social justice. His research areas include advocacy, and the social inclusion — and exclusion — of gender and and sexually diverse populations (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, two-spirit, genderqueer, intersex, queer, questioning – 2SLGBTQIA+) in social policy and service provision and the degree of recognition of these populations as distinct communities in cultural, systemic and structural contexts. Mulé also engages in critical analysis of the 2SLGBTQIA+ movement and the development of queer liberation theory. Mulé is currently leading a national research project on poverty in 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, the first national study of its kind.

Itah Sadu, author, entrepreneur

Honorary doctor of laws - Thursday, Oct. 12, 10:30 a.m.

Itah Sadu

Itah Sadu is an international, award-winning storyteller and bestselling children’s author. Her children’s books have been translated into various languages, and have been adopted for curriculum development and film adaptations.

She is the co-owner of the independent bookstore A Different Booklist with her husband, Miguel San Vicente. Their bookstore is a Toronto destination specializing in African and Caribbean-Canadian literature and diverse resources from around the world. She is also a founder of the Blackhurst Cultural Centre, formerly known as A Different Booklist Cultural Centre.

A dynamic entrepreneur and community builder, Sadu uses creativity, leadership and teamwork to create infrastructure and legacy in communities.

Her innovation has brought the city of Toronto the annual Walk With Excellence and the Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride in collaboration with the Toronto Transit Commission.

Wes Hall, Chair and founder of WeShall Investments, television personality

Wes Hall

As the Chair and founder of WeShall Investments, a private equity firm with a diverse portfolio of companies predominantly supporting Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) entrepreneurs, Wes Hall comes from humble beginnings in rural Jamaica. He grew up in a plantation worker’s shack as one of several children supported by his grandmother. In 1985, Hall immigrated to Canada, where he set out to become the businessman he is today. Dressed daily in a suit, Wes started as a mail clerk at a leading law firm in Toronto. His curiosity, intelligence and ability to spot opportunities allowed him to turn a $100,000 loan from the bank to start his first business, Kingsdale Advisors, into Canada’s pre-eminent shareholder advisory firm. 

A staunch philanthropist, Hall is deeply committed to community betterment. He founded the ambitious and highly successful BlackNorth Initiative to help end systemic anti-Black racism in Canada. He has instructed the Black Entrepreneurship & Leadership course at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, a first-of-its-kind course in North America.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce named Hall the Canadian Business Leader of 2022. He has received honorary doctorates from the University of Toronto, Queen’s University, Toronto Metropolitan University, the University of Ottawa and the University of the West Indies. He also received the Medal of Distinction from Huron University in 2022.

Other accomplishments include penning a bestselling memoir, . He launched a podcast in partnership with the Toronto Star, “Between Us with Wes Hall,” and is also on the hit CBC series “Dragons’ Den.”

Andromache Karakatsnais, justice of the Supreme Court of Canada

Justice Andromache Karakatsanis is the longest serving justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, appointed in 2011. A judge since 2002, she served first as a trial judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and then as a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Before her appointment to the bench, she worked in the justice system in diverse capacities over two decades: as a lawyer in private practice; as Chair and CEO of a regulatory tribunal; as secretary of Native Affairs for Ontario; and as deputy minister of justice and deputy attorney general of Ontario. She subsequently served as deputy minister to the premier and head of the Ontario Public Service, providing leadership to the deputy ministers and to 60,000 public servants.

Throughout her career, Karakatsanis has volunteered extensively and served on the boards of many community and professional associations. She has been recognized with numerous medals and awards in her profession and community. She currently serves as Chair of the National Action Committee on Access to Justice in Civil and Family Matters.

Nnimmo Bassey, architect, poet and environmental activist

Nnimmo Bassey is an architect, poet, director of the ecological think tank (based in Nigeria) and member of the steering committee of – a network resisting the expansion of fossil fuels extraction in the Global South.

Bassey’s books include To Cook a Continent – Destructive Extraction and the Climate Crisis in Africa, Oil Politics – Echoes of Ecological War and I will Not Dance to Your Beat (poetry).

He chaired (2008-12) and was a co-recipient of the 2010 , also known as the “alternative Nobel Prize”. In 2012, he received the

91��ɫ U disaster management and emergency response expert available for comment on hurricane season during COVID-19

TORONTO, May 22, 2020 – The 2020 hurricane season will have above-average activity levels, according to the Canadian Hurricane Centre. The Environment and Climate Change Canada agency provided this morning.

“The late May outlook for this year’s hurricane season reminds us that despite our disaster attention span being consumed by COVID-19, like clockwork, seasons change and the risk for typical seasonal disasters remains,” says , an expert in disaster management and emergency response.

Rozdilsky is available to comment on related topics, including how emergency preparedness, response and management need to change.

For example, individuals should adapt by adding hand sanitizer and masks to their 72-hour disaster preparedness kits, Rozdilsky says. Authorities are planning to rearrange public hurricane shelters to accommodate for social distancing by increasing the available floor space from 20 sq. feet to 100 sq. feet per person. As category 4 and 5 hurricanes are deadly, the predominate objective would be to get people out of dangerous coastal surge and wind zones, he says, and then secondly, deal with COVID-19.

Scientific evidence and medical advice should rule COVID-19 decisions

91��ɫ researchers found much less support for economics as the primary driver

TORONTO, April 14, 2020 – Most Canadians believe scientific evidence (82%) and advice from medical doctors (78%) should be the key influences affecting government decisions for COVID-19, with only 48 per cent putting economic considerations among the top three, research led by 91��ɫ has found.

But when asked to select up to three things they thought were actually influencing government decisions, economic considerations (56%), scientific evidence (53%) and advice from medical doctors (53%) were all at the top.

“Canadians were in high agreement that medical and scientific evidence should be driving our response to the Coronavirus, but saw a wider range of factors as currently influencing the direction,” says Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies Assistant , who is leading the project, which from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to track how Canadians understand and perceive the outbreak.

While Canadian put economics as the third consideration that should influence decisions, nearly half of those surveyed had experienced negative changes at work – including unpaid leave, reduced hours, or being laid off entirely – and 27 per cent said they would have money issues if asked to self-isolate for 14 days. That included the inability to pay rent or bills, such as electricity, or afford groceries.

The Canadian COVID-19 Social Impacts Survey looked at risk perceptions, trust, impacts and responses across the country from March 20 to April 12, and received some 2,029 responses. The team includes 91��ɫ Associate Professor of the Faculty of Health and Associate Professor of the University of Guelph. The team has also collaborated with other researchers across Canada, including Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, to help track critical measures over the course of the outbreak.

“The report represents the first in a series of rapid dissemination efforts to share our findings with practitioners and decision-makers to support their response to this crisis,” says Kennedy. “Our survey is based on input and needs identified by public health practitioners and aims to support the long-term Canadian response.”

Another surprising finding is that compared to influenza, respondents were more concerned about the severity of COVID-19 and the likelihood of many Canadians being affected – but are less worried about personally getting sick. Some 85 per cent of respondents disagreed that “the Coronavirus will not affect very many people in Canada,” while only two per cent agreed. When asked the same question about influenza on a 2019 survey, 20 per cent agreed. In other words, Canadians are highly concerned about COVID-19 with 94 per cent either agreeing or strongly agreeing that catching the virus can be serious, but only 23 per cent of Canadians believe they are likely to become sick with it.

“This is a counterintuitive finding with important implications for public health agencies. Canadians are worried about the Coronavirus in general, but there is a chance that their views of personal risk don’t align with their views of risks to others,” says Kennedy.

The researchers also found 80 to 84 per cent of Canadians support government interventions to mitigate the COVID-19 outbreak, however, less than 60 per cent support mandatory Coronavirus vaccinations when available. Broadly supported interventions include cancelling public events, closing places of worship, encouraging people to stay home, mandatory home isolation for potential exposure, and closing schools.

“In general, this seems to suggest a relatively high degree of support for collective mitigation actions designed to help the hospitals maintain sufficient capacity,” says Kennedy. “Tracking these social dimensions over the long term is critical for informing policy as we attempt to flatten the curve for an extended period of time.”

91��ɫ to host event honouring winners of Canadian Jewish Literary Awards

TORONTO, October 24, 2019��–��Eight outstanding books have been chosen for this year’s Canadian Jewish Literary Awards. Creators of these works will be honoured at a presentation ceremony hosted by 91��ɫ on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.

The free public event will be a venue to meet the winning authors, including Professor Emeritus Michael Kater of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.

“The honorees, living around the world, are bestselling Canadian authors and their books reflect the vibrancy of the culture and the appeal of Jewish themes for fiction and non-fiction writing,” said Jury Chair, Edward Trapunski.

The awards program, now in its fifth year, is sponsored in part by 91��ɫ’s ��. It recognizes Jewish writing in a number of categories: fiction, memoir, biography, history, scholarship, Holocaust, Yiddish, and books for children and youth. History and Humanities Professor Carl S. Ehrlich, editor of the winner in the Holocaust category, is also among the honorees.

91��ɫ to recognize four leaders with honorary degrees during Fall Convocation

TORONTO, October 15, 2019 – 91��ɫ will award honorary degrees at Fall Convocation to four remarkable individuals whose talent and hard work have enriched the arts, business, media, the environment and the field of human rights advocacy.

“These four individuals each have found success in very different fields, possess unique gifts and have developed their own leadership styles. But they all share one important quality: they have used their talents to go beyond their chosen careers and contribute to the public good, whether through environmentalism, advocacy, or education,” said Rhonda L. Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of 91��ɫ.

Steven Campbell, president of Lifford Wine and Spirits, is an industry leader recognized for his company’s portfolio, integrity, professionalism, philanthropy, and social and environmental responsibility. He has traveled the four corners of the world seeking out and helping artisanal wine families to bring their wines to Canada.

Campbell attended 91��ɫ during the 1970s, and started his career as a restauranteur, initially running the student coffee shop at Calumet College, purchasing a small restaurant with other 91��ɫ students in 1978, and eventually becoming a sommelier and wine bar owner in 1985.

In 1994, Campbell sold the Delisle Wine Bar to buy Lifford Wine Agency. Under his leadership, Lifford grew from a small Ontario-based company to one of the largest independent national wine and spirits distributorships in Canada. Campbell and Lifford have championed environmental causes with sustained corporate citizenship and a Zero-Carbon footprint. Lifford Wine & Spirits was honoured in 2007 with Tree Canada’s Eterne Award for environmental stewardship and has received several Elsie Awards from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario for creativity, innovation and social responsibility.�� Partnering with Tree Canada since 2005, Lifford has planted more than 90,000 trees, and raised over $3 million to support the environment, disaster relief efforts, children’s mental health, health research, and the arts.

Margot Franssen, entrepreneur and advocate for women and girls

Margot Franssen is founder, former president and partner of The Body Shop Canada, which opened in 1980 and grew to become one of Canada’s best-known brands. The company raised $1.3 million in support of a campaign against gender-based violence during her tenure. The Body Shop Canada also supported employees in performing�� 192,000 hours of community work in women’s shelters during work hours.

Franssen was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002 and received the Queen’s Diamond and Golden Jubilee Award. In 2003, she sold her company to The Body Shop International and continued her advocacy work for women and girls.

Her recent advocacy includes co-chairing the National Task Force on Sex Trafficking of Canadian Girls and co-founding The Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking.

Franssen has received many awards including The United Nations Development Fund for Women Canada Award, Top 25 Women of Influence in Canada, Twenty-One Leaders for the Twenty First Century, and The International Alliance for Women World of Difference 100 award.

An alumna of 91��ɫ (BA ’79), Franssen has served on many philanthropic and private sector boards, including 91��ɫ’s Board of Governors (1991 to 2003). She co-chaired a successful fundraising campaign at 91��ɫ and, along with her husband Quig Tingley, who was her partner at The Body Shop, established an endowed scholarship for undergraduate students in financial need.

Dionne Brand, poet, novelist, essayist and public intellectual

Dionne Brand is a renowned poet, novelist, and essayist. She is a major and singular voice in Canadian writing whose work is notable for the beauty of its language and for its intense engagement with issues of social justice. Brand is a writer ��Բ��é, whose work is insistently political, formally beautiful and precise.

A former Poet Laureate of Toronto (2009-2012) Brand has published eleven volumes of poetry, six books of fiction and two non-fiction works.

Over more than four decades of writing, Brand has received many awards, including: the Governor General’s Award for poetry and the Trillium Book Award for Land to Light On (1997); the Pat Lowther Award for poetry for thirsty; the Trillium Book Award for The Blue Clerk (2019); the Griffin Poetry Prize for Ossuaries; the Toronto Book Award for What We All Long For (2006) and Theory (2019); and the Harbourfront Festival Prize in recognition of her important contributions to literature. In 2017 she was named to the Order of Canada. Brand is a professor in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph where she teaches Creative Writing and Literature.

Trina McQueen has shaped Canada's media landscape in journalism and programming. She has broken the glass ceiling in both the public and private sector, starting as the first female host of CTV’s W-5, rising to become the first woman in North America to head a national news service, at CBC. There she launched the country's first all-news channel, now CBC News Network. Later, she moved to the private sector, where she launched Canada's Discovery Channel which was the first Canadian network to develop its own website. Later, as president and chief operating officer of CTV, she participated in a major expansion of that network and in its sale to BCE.

She become 91��ɫ's first Visiting Professor in Broadcast Management in 2008. In that role, and as adjunct professor,��she has developed and co-developed new courses for the Arts, Media and Entertainment Management Program. She is now co-director of that program and also the Bell Media Professor of Media Management. Her mission has been to develop strong relationships between the Schulich School of Business and the media industry.

In recognition of her services to broadcasting, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005. She is a member of the CBC News Hall of Fame, the Playback Movie and Television Hall of Fame, and an honorary member of the Directors Guild of Canada. She has also received the Canadian Journalism Foundation Award of Excellence, and the Academy Achievement Gemini.

TORONTO, October 10, 2019 – Money worries and economic pessimism are on the minds of Canadian voters who have made this a dominant theme of the federal election campaign.

91��ɫ experts are available to discuss the election campaign’s key issue of affordability and economic insecurity, which includes a range of topics from unemployment, affordable housing and the labour market, to tax cuts, job creation and skills training.

Election and taxes:

is an associate professor and 91��ɫ Research Chair in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies’ Department of Sociology, where he is director of the Global Digital Citizenship Lab. He can comment on the role of social media and the existence of online disinformation during the federal election campaign, the impact of Toronto and Ontario on the results of the federal election, races in downtown Toronto ridings, as well as parties’ strategies to appeal to voters in Toronto, Ontario, and Québec.

is an associate professor of income tax law in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Magee can comment on the tax changes promised by political parties during the campaign, as well as tax law and tax policy for individuals and small business.

��is an associate professor of taxation at the Schulich School of Business. Mawani can comment on taxation and economic growth, the impact tax policy has on high- and low-income Canadians, as well as all aspects of personal and corporate tax policy, including tax credits, tax rate cuts and tax revenues.

��is a professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Klassen’s research focuses on Canadian labour market policy and income security. 91��ɫ professor to discuss pressures on girls to show happiness

TORONTO, June 5, 2019 – While some admire tween girls wearing T-shirts emblazoned with slogans like “Hey you! Smile” and “When in Doubt, Laugh,” others suggest the T-shirts exemplify the pressure on young girls��to limit their real feelings.

, assistant professor in 91��ɫ’s Department of Communication Studies, researched how these message T-shirts affect the emotions of tween girls and found that they place a constant emphasis on smiling, being fun and looking happy, which precludes exhibiting other emotions.

Coulter will present her ongoing research at a lecture on Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 11:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building at 91��ɫ’s Keele campus (see #90 on the ).

“There is a lot of pressure on girls to smile and perform an emotion for the outside world that doesn’t exist internally, and this has negative, long-term implications,” said Coulter, an expert on young people’s media culture in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. “

Coulter says these T-shirts reinforce gender stereotypes with the ones aimed at young boys touting messages like “Eat. Sleep. Drink. Hockey,” while some T-shirts marketed to tween girls display messages such as “Happy Girls are the Prettiest.”

Her lecture will also address how these T-shirts function as a way to keeps girls from being political. Coulter says companies and clothing stores are positioning girlhood as a moment of fun, which limits the political possibilities for girls.

“One of the most poignant examples of this constant pressure on women to smile and be happy is the Clinton-Trump campaign,” said Coulter. “After every debate in the last U.S presidential election, Donald Trump could just stand there looking solemn and nobody cared, but Hillary Clinton had to perform, with a wave and a smile, and be happy and jubilant afterward, or she would face the wrath.”

Coulter’s research and teaching focuses on girls’ studies, critical advertising studies, and the media cultures of children and young people, with an emphasis on the social construction of marketing niches such as tween girls.

She has written extensively about young girls and tween girls, authoring and co-authoring more than 20 published journal articles and books. She co-edited ��, a look at the emotional experiences of young people as they actively use media in order to forge communities, published last year. She wrote , a book that explains how the preteen girl is a product of the marketing and media industries carving them out as a separate marketing niche.

Coulter’s talk is part of , a free day of presentations by leading 91��ɫ professors speaking about their research to an audience of 91��ɫ students, parents of students, alumni, friends and neighbours of the university.

Experts to discuss missing, murdered Indigenous women inquiry and Aboriginal rights

TORONTO, June 3, 2019 – in June is a time to recognize not only the historic contributions of Indigenous peoples, but also the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.

Brock Pitawanakwat (Anishinaabe) is an associate professor in the Department of Equity Studies, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Pitawanakwat serves as coordinator of the Indigenous Studies program in the department and is a former researcher with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He has also written and co-written several book chapters and journal articles about Indigenous languages, political participation for Indigenous youth, and Indigenous resistance and revitalization.
