With public and private partnerships in both countries, Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Schulich School of Business runs Together Mission, making startup dreams come true for several students and recent grads since 2021

Schulich School of Business successfully concluded the fifth edition of its Together Mission, recently. More than 150 students from India and Canada participated in the unique mentoring and venture pitching competition.

A deep tech company that鈥檚 focused on transforming crop waste into sustainable carbon, a patented reusable LED bulb with replaceable cartridge, and a painless testing technology to detect oral cancer, were among the top six startups competing in the , following a weeklong rigorous bootcamp.

After much deliberation, the judges announced ProtonCraft, a patent-pending electrolyzer as this year鈥檚 winner of the highly successful initiative that shapes the next generation of entrepreneurs emerging from Indian universities and Schulich鈥檚 graduate programs.

Dubbed as Together 5.0 this year, the global initiative by Schulich School in partnership with Government of India鈥檚 and the Consulate General of India in Toronto, and the City of Toronto, brought together multinational organizations, leading entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and investors from Canada and India to mentor participating student teams.

鈥淐anada and India are natural partners. We share a commitment to pluralism and to excellence in education and innovation,鈥 said 91亚色鈥檚 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton, at the launch event, noting that she visited India last year, to explore research, entrepreneurship and education collaboration across the country. 鈥淚t's fundamental to strengthening the well-being of the communities that we serve. This shared sense of purpose binds our present and our future.鈥

Schulich Adjunct[MOU1]  Professor Chris Carder, the person behind this innovative initiative also spoke about his visit to India earlier, during which time he presented the idea of a startup bridge between 91亚色 and the Indian innovation economy to Schulich鈥檚 India Advisory Board members, including  Mr. Ratan Tata. , Carder recalled that the late Indian businessman and philanthropist expressed keen interest in seeing the initiative takeoff.

Lokesh Goswami, a past winner of the venture competition shared his experience as an engineer-turned entrepreneur. The co-founder and chief technical officer of Angirus, an innovative company that takes pride in its product, wricks, developed as an eco-friendly and sustainable technology to make waterproof bricks using 100 percent recycled waste material. He highlighted how his team made of only students who were trying their hands on entrepreneurship by participating in the pitching competition and 鈥済ot a trailer of a whole startup鈥 journey by the end of Together 2021. He also offered several tips to current participants ahead of the competition, asking them to have an open mindset and be willing to share their venture ideas with mentors for best results.

鈥淲ith this year鈥檚 theme-based solutions, we aimed to improve people鈥檚 lives while addressing areas of national and global importance,鈥 pointed out Carder, who is also the executive director of the Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship and co-director of Entrepreneurial studies at Schulich. 鈥淚ncreasing access to the global startup ecosystem through coaching and mentorship sessions by industry leaders, plus offering these young entrepreneurs with feedback from judges during the competition were key parts of this year鈥檚 program.鈥

While the startups are founded by Indian students, Schulich MBA students are trained by Schulich Instructor Cherry Rose Tan and Carder himself, to guide Indian students on how to design commercialization strategies and express their concepts to investors.

Students from sectors including e-mobility, environment and energy, health care, income security and fintech, food and agriculture, telecommunications, textiles and education were among this year鈥檚 participants. Aside from learning to be efficient entrepreneurs, participants from both countries also had the opportunity to make new lifetime connections and perhaps collaborate in the future.

Diplomatic relations between India and Canada in the aftermath of the . A recent between pro-Khalistan protesters and Hindu nationalists has created further tensions.

Dozens of pro-Khalistan Sikhs, , gathered outside the Brampton temple to protest the presence of Indian consulate officials in the Toronto area.

The protesters support the Khalistan movement that seeks to create a homeland for Sikhs in northern India. The movement is banned in India but permitted in Canada.

Several Canadian media outlets reported on the Brampton clash, but most did not highlight the role of far-right Hindu nationalists and chanted at the temple.

In videos circulating on social media, the priest at the Hindu Sabha Mandir temple, later identified as Rajinder Prasad, .

He shouts in Hindi: 鈥淏atenge toh鈥,鈥 and the crowd shouts back, 鈥淜atenge!鈥

What it means

The controversial phrase batenge toh katenge can be loosely translated to 鈥渋f we are divided, we will be destroyed鈥 or 鈥渄ivided we fall. But this apparent call for Hindu unity has an ominous meaning that upholds Hindu nationalist principles and is at odds with democratic norms.

The slogan is directly linked to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in August this year in Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

Adityanath, a politician and monk , remarked that 鈥渢he nation will be empowered only when we are united. Several members of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its Hindu nationalist parent organization, , have taken up the catchy slogan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi leveraged Yogi鈥檚 speech in another rally, saying, 鈥 鈥 鈥渋f we divide, the people who divide us will make merry.鈥

Similarly, in Bihar in October, called the audience with 鈥渂atenge鈥 and heard the response from the crowd: 鈥渒atenge.

鈥淵ou are yourself saying we will be butchered if we don鈥檛 unite. So, all of you keep swords and trishuls at home. Lord Shiva keeps trishul in his hand and goddess Durga keeps a sword in her hand. You too worship these weapons and defend yourselves from the attackers.鈥

In Singh鈥檚 speech, batenge toh katenge takes up a form of Hindu militancy where gods and their mythological forms and weapons are invoked for potential violence.

Temples in Hindu nationalist politics

has played an important role in the rise of Indian Hindu nationalism, which has stoked fear around the notion of the to attacks by 鈥渙utsiders.鈥

One of the longest legal and political battles in post-colonial India . Insisting that a Hindu temple existed at the site prior to the Babri mosque, Hindu nationalist groups .

The promise of building a temple in the place of the demolished mosque played a key role in . Discourse around the protection of temples has since been central to the rise of Hindu nationalism in contemporary times.

Rhetoric of Hindu unity

As the Hindu crowd gathered recently at the Brampton temple and repeatedly chanted batenge toh katenge at the priest鈥檚 prompting, it was clear that the Indian diaspora is familiar with the slogan.

The phrase taps into an exaggerated that has been carefully structured and mobilized. Prasad, the Brampton priest, was , though reinstated after temple-goers .

A lot rides on the Hindu nationalist discourse of Hindu unity. In Essentials of Hindutva, :

鈥淪ome of us were Aryans and some Anaryans; but Ayars and Nayars 鈥 we were all Hindus and own a common blood. Some of us are Brahmans and some Namashudras or Panchamas; but Brahmans or Chandalas 鈥 we are all Hindus and own a common blood. Some of us are Daxinatyas and some Gauds; but Gauds or Saraswatas 鈥 we are all Hindus and own a common blood. Some of us were Rakhasas and some Yakshas; but Rakshasas or Yakshas 鈥 we are all Hindus and own a common blood.鈥

He lists caste differences and the racialization of the different peoples of the Indian subcontinent to make a case for Hindu unity.

Hindu nationalist forces have in fact attempted to to create the illusion of Hindu unity. But this supposed Hindu unity is ultimately aimed at strengthening and creating a binary of Hindus and non-Hindus.

Hindu nationalism in the West

The Hindu nationalist movement has been adept at using a language of liberalism and multiculturalism to build and promote its politics in the West. Much political manoeuvring happens in the guise of tradition and heritage.

For instance, Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, one of the earliest Hindu nationalist organizations in the United States, claims .

The Canadian Hindu Association lists its objectives as creating .鈥

Nonetheless, the association鈥檚 leaders have a of invoking violence. Ron Banerjee, director of the non-profit Hindu Conference of Canada, .

The phrase batenge toh katenge is a pro-violence , not a call for unity, and therefore needs to be understood in terms of how rabid Hindu nationalism is covered and investigated in Canada.

Naima Sood credits University community with encouraging her to pursue an impressive array of leadership roles.

Recently, as she prepared to graduate with a degree in sociology from 91亚色, international student Naima Sood said she was leaving campus with a newfound confidence in her abilities and the freedom to use her voice, both of which she struggled to find growing up in New Delhi.

鈥淚 came from India feeling doubtful about myself, and 91亚色 truly gave me an opportunity to become the person I am today,鈥 said Sood, 22. 鈥淚 definitely feel like I鈥檓 ready to take on what鈥檚 next for me, and if there are disappointments that come my way, 91亚色 has better prepared me for that. 91亚色 has prepared me for the journey ahead 鈥 the good, bad, the ugly, all of it. I鈥檓 ready to take it on.鈥

Over her four years at 91亚色鈥檚 Glendon College, Sood embodied the University鈥檚 mission to use her voice, experience and skills to create positive change.

She was a member of the Glendon student caucus, giving her a voice on programming choices when they were debated at faculty council meetings. She was a student representative on a committee to find a new principal for Glendon. She helped establish a Model United Nations on campus, and she was an executive on 91亚色鈥檚 UNICEF Club, which runs fundraising events and awareness campaigns about issues that impact children across Canada and the globe.

And, perhaps unsurprisingly, given her accomplishments, the University鈥檚 recruitment office hired her as a student ambassador to help prospective international students get a feel for life at Glendon.

Naima Sood walks the stage at Convocation 2022 to receive her degree from 91亚色 President Rhonda Lenton.

Sood dreamed of studying abroad even before she was a teenager. Her father, who is head of operations for BBC in India and South Asia, and her mother, who teaches mindfulness, had always been supportive.

Sood arrived in Canada in 2017, after her father had travelled to Glendon to give her a virtual walking tour over FaceTime. Before long, she had fallen in love with Glendon鈥檚 surrounding north-Toronto neighbourhood, not far from the tony Bridal Path enclave, where enterprising sightseers can find rap star Drake鈥檚 opulent mansion.

But what she came to value most, as she settled into her studies, was the support she received from her peers, professors and University staff, who pushed her to reach again for leadership roles.

鈥淲hen I came from high school, I didn鈥檛 really have faith in myself that I could do it, but with the peers and the environment that Glendon created, it gave me faith in my own abilities and re-instilled that, hey, I鈥檓 capable. I can do this.鈥

In the classroom, in the midst of all her extracurricular commitments, Sood dug deeper into the differences she was perceiving between life in India and in Canada, particularly migration policies and women鈥檚 rights. Through the coursework she completed for her minor in communications, she interrogated the implications of fake news and the explosion of social media. And she found time to pick up French, a language she had had only a passing grasp of in India.

"When I came from high school, I didn鈥檛 really have faith in myself that I could do it, but with the peers and the environment that Glendon created, it gave me faith in my own abilities and re-instilled that, hey, I鈥檓 capable. I can do this.鈥

Naima Sood

Sood put her academic experience to use in real life, volunteering in a communications role for the Ontario Liberal Party during the four-week provincial election in 2018.

Today, Sood is trying to get a foothold in a career in communications as a content creator or production assistant. She hopes to use that as a springboard to one day produce a network series that shines a spotlight on the different practices of people and cultures around the globe, the kind of perspective her transition from India to Canada gave her when she was 18.

鈥淭he biggest thing that I鈥檝e liked about Canada is the freedom that you have to voice your opinions, the freedom that you have to say things without a judgment being attached to them and the open policy we have of just listening to on another without any feeling of anger or hatred coming in,鈥 she said.

Her parents travelled from India to watch her walk across the stage and collect her degree at convocation in June 鈥 91亚色 U鈥檚 first in-person convocation since the beginning of the CODD-19 pandemic.

She can stay in Canada on her student visa until 2023 after which she plans to lengthen her stay by applying for a work permit once she finds her first job.

鈥淗opefully, within the next six to eight months, I can land myself a job, which I鈥檓 passionate about and excited about. And then I can start the process of finding an apartment, finding a home and moving in 鈥 the adulting will truly begin.鈥

This year鈥檚 Glendon Convocation took place on Saturday, June 18, at Glendon Green. All 2020 and 2021 graduates who attended virtual ceremonies were also welcomed back to campus on that day in celebration of their degrees.

New Delhi.

Depuis son enfance, Naima r锚vait d鈥檃ller 茅tudier 脿 l鈥櫭﹖ranger.

Gr芒ce 脿 mes pairs et 脿 l鈥檈nvironnement que Glendon a cr茅茅, j鈥檃i pris confiance en mes capacit茅s et je me suis dit que je pouvais faire 莽a. 禄
