Dear 91亚色 Community,

During Pride Month, we celebrate the contributions the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities have made to 91亚色鈥檚 values of equity, diversity, inclusivity and social justice.听

At 91亚色, we recognize that we must continue to stand against homophobia and all forms of discrimination and racism to ensure that all community members feel a sense of belonging. We will continue to work at creating spaces that are free from discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation and where everyone is valued. We understand that our community members have intersectional identities. Together, we have a shared responsibility to create an environment that allows all community members to be their most authentic self. 

We encourage everyone to visit the Pride Month website and participate in the many events and celebrations happening throughout the month to learn more about the significant contributions 2SLGBTQIA+ community members have made across the University.  

It is our responsibility to work towards removing barriers for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who have been historically, structurally and systematically excluded. We are committed to creating an affirming and inclusive teaching, learning and work environment for all our community members.

Dear 91亚色 Community,

Today marks the start of Indigenous History Month, a time when we acknowledge Indigenous Peoples 鈥 their history, cultures, and many contributions and achievements. It is a specific opportunity to learn about and engage with Indigenous knowledges, languages, practices, and ways of being and their importance to both 91亚色 and Canadian society more broadly.

91亚色 has acted with intention in cultivating relationships and creating space and place for the Indigenous community. Working with the Indigenous Council and in response to recommendations made in the and Decolonizing Research Administration report, last year, we welcomed the first associate vice president, Indigenous initiatives to our leadership team. This year, we also established the Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages (CIKL) and awarded the first Indigenous postdoctoral fellow with the inaugural Provost鈥檚 Postdoctoral fellowships for Black and Indigenous Scholars. Additionally, the 91亚色 Indigenous Research Seed Fund, announced in May 22, awarded 10 scholars a total of $204,298.

91亚色 looks forward to strengthening relationships with the local Indigenous communities that surround our campuses and we acknowledge that there is a long journey towards our goal of decolonization and reconciliation.

We encourage you to seek knowledge about the ways in which Indigenous peoples have contributed to society and history through the resources that are available to you. Please also take the time to learn about the many Indigenous initiatives that are taking place at 91亚色.

Dear 91亚色 community members,

Our society has benefited immensely from Indigenous knowledge, languages and ways of knowing and being. Indigenous people contribute to positive change in our communities, our environment and to the enrichment and well-being of society.

Indigenous scholars and students have made and continue to achieve tremendous success in research, teaching and learning, despite ongoing barriers rooted in deep colonial policies and practices that govern research administration and in many ways conflict with Indigenous research methodologies. 91亚色 acknowledges the implications of the lack of attention and recognition that was given to the legitimacy of Indigenous knowledge in the past.

91亚色 is committed to supporting emerging and established Indigenous scholars and the knowledge creation they are involved with, in collaboration with the community, knowledge keepers and elders. This commitment has been and continues to be an ongoing journey. 91亚色 was the first Canadian university where a dissertation was written and defended in an Indigenous language. We are committed to putting in the work to support and recognize the legitimacy of Indigenous knowledge and the value that Indigenous scholars contribute. We recognize the significance of Indigenous languages and the knowledge embedded in language.

In November 2017, 91亚色 launched the , which identified 10 principles the University needed to take action on to advance the goals of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Guided by the Framework, and working in consultation with the Indigenous Council, the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation developed a Decolonizing Research Administration Report to address the University鈥檚 research administration practices and policies, and to identify further steps the University should take to better support and foster Indigenous scholars.

The University has taken positive steps in this journey to date.

  • In May 2018, 91亚色 launched its听Strategic Research Plan 2018鈥2023: Towards New Heights, which identified Indigenous futurities as an opportunity to advance social, cultural, artistic, legal, policy, economic and justice areas that holistically shape Indigenous experience. 91亚色 remains committed to building community partnerships in research, and to facilitating research that is relevant to Indigenous life and respects Indigenous approaches to knowledge and learning.
  • In June 2020, 91亚色 launched the听University Academic Plan 2020鈥2025: Building a Better Future, which affirmed its commitment to the Indigenous Framework and identified six priorities for action for building a better future, including stronger relationships with Indigenous communities.
  • In July 2021, 91亚色 announced the appointment of Professor听Susan D. Dion听to the inaugural role of associate vice-president Indigenous initiatives. Professor Dion is a Lenape and Potawatomi scholar with mixed Irish and French ancestry and was the first Indigenous tenure-track faculty member to be hired by the Faculty of Education at 91亚色. Professor Dion鈥檚 work has been instrumental to the implementation of 91亚色鈥檚 Indigenous Framework and the Decolonization Research Administration Report.
  • In September 2021, 91亚色 launched the听Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages听鈥 the first organized research unit of its kind at 91亚色 鈥 which is committed to Indigenous approaches for the environment, education, languages and decolonizing research. The Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages is led by inaugural Director听Deborah McGregor, an associate professor at 91亚色 and the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Environmental Justice at Osgoode Hall Law School.
  • In December 2021, the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation awarded $525,000 to two projects focused on advancing Indigenous futurities through the Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Research Clusters. The projects include 鈥淚ndigenous Climate Leadership and Self-Determined Futures,鈥 led by听Deborah McGregor, Osgoode Hall Law School and听Angele Alook, Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and 鈥淔rom Colonial Genocide to Just Relationships: Building Interdisciplinary Research Excellence for Indigenous Futurities,鈥 led by听Luann Good Gingrich, Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and听Heidi Matthews, Osgoode Hall Law School.
  • In the Winter 2023 term, the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation will launch the first wholly autonomous Indigenous Research Ethics Board, which will be led and advised by Indigenous members, with the goal of providing oversight and ethics review into research involving Indigenous Peoples.

We would like to commend the Indigenous Council, the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation and the Division of Equity, People and Culture for their progress to date, and for their unwavering commitment to supporting Indigenous research and the work of Indigenous scholars.

The University is fully committed to taking action to decolonize research, and to recognizing and supporting research in service of the sovereignty and self-determination goals of Indigenous people, now and in the future. We will foster and promote scholarly activity relevant to Indigenous life, while respecting Indigenous approaches to knowledge and learning. By doing so, we will live our values by championing diversity and by creating a supportive, inclusive and caring environment for all.

The decolonization of research is not a short-term goal and there is still a great distance to go, but 91亚色 is committed to putting in the work. We will continue to consult and collaborate with Indigenous scholars and students to build spaces and places for Indigenous knowledges and languages.

En novembre 2017, 91亚色 a lanc茅 le , qui identifiait dix principes que l鈥橴niversit茅 devait mettre en 艙uvre pour faire avancer les objectifs de la Commission de v茅rit茅 et de r茅conciliation. S鈥檌nspirant de ce cadre et en consultation avec le Conseil autochtone, le Bureau du vice-pr茅sident de la recherche et de l鈥檌nnovation a 茅labor茅 un Rapport sur la d茅colonisation de l鈥檃dministration de la recherche afin d鈥檈xaminer les pratiques et les politiques de l鈥橴niversit茅 en mati猫re d鈥檃dministration de la recherche et de d茅terminer les mesures suppl茅mentaires que l鈥橴niversit茅 devrait adopter pour mieux soutenir et encourager les chercheurs autochtones.

脌 ce jour, l鈥橴niversit茅 a pris des mesures positives dans ce sens :

  • En mai 2018, 91亚色 a lanc茅 son Strategic Research Plan 2018-2023 : Towards New Heights, qui consid猫re les futurs autochtones comme une occasion de faire progresser les domaines sociaux, culturels, artistiques, juridiques, politiques, 茅conomiques et judiciaires qui fa莽onnent l鈥檈xp茅rience autochtone de mani猫re holistique. L鈥橴niversit茅 91亚色 reste d茅termin茅e 脿 茅tablir des partenariats communautaires dans le domaine de la recherche et 脿 faciliter les recherches pertinentes 脿 la vie des Autochtones et qui respectent les approches autochtones en mati猫re de connaissances et d鈥檃pprentissage.
  • En juin 2020, 91亚色 a lanc茅 le Plan acad茅mique de l鈥橴niversit茅 2020-2025 : B芒tir un avenir meilleur dans lequel elle affirme son engagement envers le cadre autochtone et d茅finit six priorit茅s d鈥檃ction en vue d鈥檜n avenir meilleur, notamment le renforcement des relations avec les communaut茅s autochtones.
  • En juillet 2021, 91亚色 a annonc茅 la nomination de la professeure Susan D. Dion au poste inaugural de vice-pr茅sidente associ茅e aux affaires autochtones. La professeure Dion est une 茅rudite Lenape et Potawatomi d鈥檃scendance irlandaise et fran莽aise. Elle est la premi猫re professeure autochtone engag茅e par la Facult茅 d鈥櫭ヾucation de 91亚色 qui occupe un poste menant 脿 la permanence. Le travail de la professeure Dion a 茅t茅 d茅terminant pour la mise en 艙uvre du cadre autochtone de 91亚色 et du rapport de l鈥檃dministration de la recherche sur la d茅colonisation.
  • En septembre 2021, 91亚色 a lanc茅 le Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages 鈥 la premi猫re unit茅 de recherche organis茅e de ce genre 脿 91亚色 鈥 qui s鈥檈ngage 脿 adopter des approches autochtones pour l鈥檈nvironnement, l鈥櫭ヾucation, les langues et la recherche d茅colonisatrice. Le Centre des savoirs et langues autochtones est dirig茅 par sa toute premi猫re directrice, Deborah McGregor, professeure agr茅g茅e 脿 91亚色 et titulaire de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en justice environnementale autochtone 脿 l鈥櫭塩ole de droit Osgoode Hall.
  • En mai 2022, dans le cadre d鈥檜ne initiative conjointe avec la vice-pr茅sidente de l鈥櫭﹒uit茅, le Bureau du vice-pr茅sident de la recherche et de l鈥檌nnovation des personnes et de la culture a accord茅 10 subventions de d茅marrage pour la recherche autochtone. Il a ainsi engag茅 204鈥298 $ pour intensifier les efforts de l鈥橴niversit茅 afin de lutter contre le colonialisme dans la recherche et de promouvoir l鈥檈xcellence dans la recherche autochtone. Un montant additionnel de 795鈥000 $ a 茅t茅 engag茅 pour soutenir la recherche autochtone au cours des trois prochaines ann茅es.
  • En d茅cembre 2021, le Bureau du vice-pr茅sident de la recherche et de l鈥檌nnovation a accord茅 525鈥000 $ 脿 deux projets ax茅s sur l鈥檃vancement de futurs autochtones par le biais de groupes de recherche interdisciplinaire catalyseurs. Nous tenons 脿 f茅liciter le Conseil autochtone, le Bureau du vice-pr茅sident de la recherche et de l鈥檌nnovation et la Division de l鈥櫭﹒uit茅, des personnes et de la culture pour les progr猫s r茅alis茅s 脿 ce jour et pour leur engagement ind茅fectible envers la recherche autochtone et le travail des chercheurs autochtones.

L鈥橴niversit茅 s鈥檈ngage pleinement 脿 prendre des mesures pour d茅coloniser la recherche ainsi qu鈥櫭 reconna卯tre et 脿 soutenir la recherche au service des objectifs de souverainet茅 et d鈥檃utod茅termination des peuples autochtones, aujourd鈥檋ui et 脿 l鈥檃venir. Nous favoriserons et ferons la promotion d鈥檃ctivit茅s savantes pertinentes pour la vie autochtone tout en respectant les approches autochtones de la connaissance et de l鈥檃pprentissage. Ce faisant, nous vivrons nos valeurs en d茅fendant la diversit茅 et en cr茅ant un environnement favorable, inclusif et bienveillant pour tout le monde.

La d茅colonisation de la recherche n鈥檈st pas un objectif 脿 court terme. Il reste encore beaucoup de chemin 脿 parcourir, mais 91亚色 s鈥檈ngage 脿 y mettre du sien. Nous continuerons 脿 consulter les universitaires autochtones et les membres de population 茅tudiante autochtone et 脿 collaborer avec eux afin de cr茅er des espaces et des lieux pour les connaissances et les langues autochtones.

Dear 91亚色 community members,

Each year, on March 8, 91亚色 joins communities around the world in celebrating International Women鈥檚 Day, and the many contributions women have made locally and globally to advance gender equity.

91亚色 champions the diverse lived experiences of women and acknowledges the intersectionality of gender, ability, age, identity, race, gender diversity and Indigeneity on their lives. The theme for International Women鈥檚 Day 2022, #BreakTheBias, serves to acknowledge the struggles, barriers and work yet to be done in creating a more resilient, equitable and sustainable future for us all.

Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to advance personally and professionally. But acknowledging that bias exists is not enough 鈥 we must take action. 91亚色 is working to break the six common types of biases at work: likeability bias, attribution bias, performance bias, affinity bias, maternal bias and intersectionality bias. Additionally, 91亚色鈥檚 2020鈥2025 Academic Plan: Building a Better Future calls on the entire community to take meaningful action towards advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals 鈥 including SDG 5: Gender Equality 鈥 to create more equitable access to education that ensures no talent is left behind, and to advance equity in our research, teaching and learning.  

We want to wish all of 91亚色鈥檚 students, staff, faculty, course instructors and alumni a happy International Women鈥檚 Day, and thank you all for your support and contributions as we move towards an inclusive, diverse and equitable world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.  

Together, we can all break the bias.

Over this past year, several incidents bearing on the academic freedom of members of the 91亚色 Community have been brought to my attention. In each case, individuals and groups external to the University have appealed to senior leadership to intercede against faculty members due to statements made, or research published, in the course of their legitimate scholarly activities. In connection with these appeals, I wish to again affirm 91亚色鈥檚 unequivocal support of academic freedom.

I previously noted that how debate is conducted matters a great deal. No matter our personal stake in an issue, it is essential that discourse on controversial issues not devolve into personal attacks or, at worst, threatening, racist, or hateful speech. I encourage all participants in a debate to take care to ensure that they do not, inadvertently or otherwise, empower or unleash individuals, beliefs, or expressions that are antithetical to open and productive dialogue.

Members of both the 91亚色 community and the broader community are of course free to disagree with the views expressed by faculty members, and as an institution dedicated to free inquiry the University welcomes vigorous, thoughtful, and respectful counter鈥恠peech. However, I want to reiterate that 91亚色 condemns all forms of discrimination, racism, and hate, whether it is Islamophobic, anti鈥怱emitic, anti鈥怋lack, anti鈥怚ndigenous, sexist, homophobic, or directed against any racialized or marginalized individual or group. Such speech is contrary to our foundational values as an institution.

I also want to emphasize that these commitments 鈥 to free inquiry and to equity, diversity, and inclusion 鈥 are in no way antithetical to one another. On the contrary, it is by encouraging a diversity of perspectives, thought, and experiences that we most effectively foster the free pursuit and exchange of knowledge. 91亚色 is undertaking a number of actions aimed at addressing the harmful impact of systemic racism both on members of our community and on the nature and scope of academic inquiry. These actions include the dedicated hiring of Black, Indigenous, and racialized faculty members, and form an important component of a broader equity strategy to promote diversity and inclusion, which is expected to be released to the community for consultation soon.

In a previous statement, I assured all members of our community that 91亚色 remains steadfast in its defence of academic freedom, and will not censure any faculty member for their research or public statements made in the course of their scholarly work 鈥 subject to legal and policy limits. I want to take this opportunity to address all current and prospective faculty who are members of racialized or marginalized groups. 91亚色 recognizes that the work of scholars and educators from equity-seeking groups has been subject to heightened scrutiny and criticism, and that debate about that work has taken the form of personal and discriminatory attack rather than considered and informed engagement with its substance.

91亚色 is committed to the continued practice of upholding, protecting, and promoting academic freedom for all faculty members.  As the University moves forward with its equity strategy, including its Indigenous Framework and Action Plan on Black Inclusion, we commit ourselves to playing an essential role in creating new knowledge, challenging existing ideas, and providing a forum in which to explore and address difficult and complex issues. We cannot fulfill those objectives unless all voices can feel safe and secure expressing their views.

J鈥檃i d茅j脿 fait remarquer que la fa莽on dont le d茅bat est men茅importe beaucoup. Quel que soit notre int茅r锚t personnel pour une question, il est essentiel que les discours sur des sujets controvers茅s ne se transforment pas en attaques personnelles, ou 鈥 bien pire 鈥 en menaces ou discours racistes ou haineux. J鈥檌nvite tous les participants d鈥檜n d茅bat 脿 veiller 脿 ne pas donner, par inadvertance ou autrement, de pouvoir ou de libert茅 脿 des individus, des croyances ou des expressions contraires 脿 un dialogue ouvert et productif.

Les membres de la communaut茅 de 91亚色 et de la communaut茅 en g茅n茅ral sont 茅videmment libres de ne pas 锚tre d鈥檃ccord avec les opinions exprim茅es par les membres du corps professoral. En tant qu鈥櫭﹖ablissement consacr茅 au libre examen, l鈥橴niversit茅 encourage un contre-discours vigoureux, r茅fl茅chi et respectueux. L鈥橴niversit茅 91亚色 condamne toutes les formes de discrimination, de racisme et de haine, qu鈥檈lles soient islamophobes, antis茅mites, anti-Noirs, anti-autochtones, sexistes, homophobes, ou dirig茅es contre tout individu ou groupe racialis茅 ou marginalis茅. Un tel discours est contraire 脿 nos valeurs fondamentales en tant qu鈥檜niversit茅.

Je tiens 茅galement 脿 souligner que ces engagements 鈥 en faveur de la libert茅 de recherche et de l鈥櫭﹒uit茅, de la diversit茅 et de l鈥檌nclusion 鈥 ne sont en aucun cas en contradiction les uns envers les autres. Au contraire, c鈥檈st en encourageant la diversit茅 des perspectives, des pens茅es et des exp茅riences que nous favorisons le plus efficacement la libre poursuite et l鈥櫭ヽhange des connaissances. 91亚色 a entrepris plusieurs actions visant 脿 rem茅dier 脿 l鈥檌mpact n茅faste du racisme syst茅mique 脿 la fois sur les membres de notre communaut茅 et sur la nature et la port茅e des recherches universitaires. Dear members of the 91亚色 community,

I am pleased to share that yesterday, the University鈥檚 Board of Governors approved Living Well Together: Keele Campus Vision and Strategy, a foundational document that sets a clear path forward for re-imagining more than 190 acres on 91亚色鈥檚 Keele campus.  

Centered on the priorities identified within the University Academic Plan 2020鈥2025: Building a Better Future, and underscored by our commitment to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we have an opportunity to strengthen our impact as a university, and to further our vision of providing a broad sociodemographic of students with access to a high-quality education at a research-intensive university that is committed to enhancing the well-being of the communities we serve.

Recent world events have influenced our thinking regarding sustainability, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation. Living Well Together: Keele Campus Vision and Strategy embraces social and environmental responsibility, placing emphasis on projects that help us realize the aspirations of our academic plan, fulfill our commitment to being carbon neutral by 2049 or sooner, and leverage 91亚色鈥檚 to maximize the positive impact of such a large-scale project.

It is also inspired by our reflections over these past 18 months regarding the future of higher education and how to enhance efforts to utilize the resources we have to strengthen the student learning experience; support new programs in emerging areas of need; and intensify research, entrepreneurship, and incubation, while also meeting community needs. 

These uncertain times also serve as an important reminder that the plan must be a living document, open to revision as circumstances demand and shaped by ongoing consultation and engagement conversations within our community, with our surrounding neighbours and future neighbours, and with other important partners, like community groups, governments, and developers. 

Living Well Together: Keele Campus Vision and Strategy begins with the reinvigoration of the Harry W. Arthurs Common, the heart of the campus and the location of the 91亚色 subway stop. The plan also sets out four new neighbourhoods: a commercial centre, a high-tech district, a primarily residential district, and a mixed-use residential, commercial, and athletic neighbourhood adjacent to the Pioneer Village subway stop. Each of the new neighbourhoods will add complementary features and projects that support the University鈥檚 academic mission and deliver social benefits like affordable housing and community services 鈥 amenities that will serve the 91亚色 community, our neighbours, and new residents alike.

A 21st century university campus has an important role to play as an anchor institution 鈥 as a hub, as a resource for surrounding communities, and as a place to learn and grow. This is a once in a lifetime chance to envision, shape, and develop a truly community-engaged university campus: intentionally inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and welcoming to diverse communities.

With the 91亚色 Board of Governors having approved the new Keele Campus Vision and Strategy, we can move forward with the consultation and engagement on preparing a plan for how best to implement the strategy. I look forward to moving this exciting plan forward.

Bien vivre ensemble : Vision et strat茅gie du campus Keele commence par la revitalisation du Harry W. Arthurs Common, le c艙ur du campus et l鈥檈mplacement de l鈥檃rr锚t de m茅tro 91亚色. Le plan pr茅voit 茅galement la cr茅ation de quatre nouveaux quartiers : un centre commercial, un district de haute technologie, un district principalement r茅sidentiel et un district 脿 usage mixte (r茅sidentiel, commercial et sportif) adjacent 脿 l鈥檃rr锚t de m茅tro Pioneer Village. Dear colleagues,

I am delighted to inform colleagues in our Division of Advancement and across the University that, following an extensive national and international search process, 91亚色 has selected a new Vice-President of Advancement. The Board of Governors has accepted the recommendation of the search committee that Susana Gajic-Bruyea be appointed for an initial five-year term commencing January 1, 2022.

Susana Gajic-Bruyea has twenty-five years鈥 experience in higher education advancement, most recently as the Associate Vice-President, Alumni Relations and Development at Western University in London, Ontario. Prior to her time at Western, Susana served at two universities in California 鈥 first as Executive Director, Advancement, University of California (Merced), and then as Vice-President for University Advancement at California State University (Stanislaus). She also spent ten years working in advancement at the University of Toronto, where she played a key role in the success of their first $1 billion fundraising campaign.

Susana is a graduate of the University of Toronto and has an MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University. She is a member of and has volunteered with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE), and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). She is also a proud mentor with the Women in Leadership Foundation.

We are delighted to announce that the search for the Deputy Provost to lead our Markham Campus realization has reached a successful conclusion. 

This is an important and exciting time in 91亚色鈥檚 evolution as we bring to fruition plans for innovative teaching and research programs, physical space, and partnerships for our new Markham Campus in 91亚色 Region, which will welcome its first cohort of students in September 2023. The new campus is situated in the fastest growing region in Ontario, and will offer students innovative, relevant, job-ready academic programming and research opportunities focused on digital media arts, engineering and technology, entrepreneurship, management, new media and communications.

Following an extensive search which attracted outstanding candidates, the search committee recommended the appointment of Dr. Gordon Binsted to the position of Deputy Provost Markham. We are very pleased that Dr. Binsted has accepted our invitation to take up a five-year term, commencing January 1, 2022.

Dr. Gordon Binsted

Dr. Binsted joins us from University of British Columbia, where he has most recently served as Dean, Faculty of Health and Social Development at the Okanagan Campus. During his time as Dean, which began in 2011, he has additionally served as Associate Provost, Strategic Health Initiatives; interim Dean, Faculty of Education; interim Vice-Principal Research for UBC Okanagan Campus, and interim Vice-Principal Academic and Provost for UBC Okanagan Campus. His extensive academic leadership experience at UBC has included a role as Founding Director of that university鈥檚 School of Health and Exercise Sciences, the development of new degree programs and the re-design of curricula, all while working to focus faculty time and resources on research intensification. Dr. Binsted鈥檚 efforts at UBC have included developing a campus-wide co-op program and a campus-industry incubator, as well as advancing supportive admissions for Indigenous learners. Prior to these leadership roles, Dr. Binsted taught at the Universities of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Illinois, Urbana-Champagne, and held roles as Research Fellow at University of Aberdeen and the Beckman Institute in Illinois. 

Having made faculty and student renewal a top priority during his time as Founding Director and then Dean, Dr. Binsted shepherded a ten-fold increase in faculty and student cohorts. He has built substantial international profile and recognition for his Faculty and Department in part by establishing formal mechanisms for mentorship and support of faculty as they move through their careers, including teaching, research and grant mentorship. In doing so, divisional research grant success increased by a factor of five, and research output by a factor of 10 in a decade. With extensive experience in collegial governance across the university system, Dr. Binsted is strongly committed to offering opportunities to students to expand their world view and see themselves as responsible to become leaders in their communities. 

An advocate for diversity and inclusion in the widest sense, he supports 91亚色 taking on a national leadership role on reconciliation and the decolonization of the institution and sees the new Markham Campus as an opportunity to further strengthen the University鈥檚 contributions to the social and economic well-being of communities in surrounding 91亚色 Region and beyond. 

Dr. Binsted holds degrees from University of British Columbia, McMaster University and University of Alberta, where he completed his PhD in Experimental Psychology. His research explores ways in which the human brain controls movement by detecting and using sensory information. He has published dozens of articles in the top journals in his field and has contributed book chapters and conference proceedings to significant publications and societies. He has received numerous research grants, including several from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He has given more than 200 presentations at conferences and as a keynote speaker.

Ses recherches explorent les moyens par lesquels le cerveau humain contr么le le mouvement en d茅tectant et en utilisant des informations sensorielles. Il a publi茅 des dizaines d鈥檃rticles dans les meilleures publications de sa discipline et a r茅dig茅 des chapitres de livres et des travaux de congr猫s pour des publications et des soci茅t茅s renomm茅es. Dear colleagues,

I am delighted to inform colleagues in the Schulich School of Business and across the 91亚色 community that the search for the next Dean of the Schulich School of Business has reached a successful conclusion. The search committee, chaired by Provost Lisa Philipps and comprised of members of SSB (full-time and contract faculty, staff, students and alumni) and myself, undertook an extensive national and international search, which attracted outstanding candidates for this key position in our University. On October 12, 2021, the Board of Governors concurred with my recommendation that Dr. Detlev Zwick be appointed to the position of Dean, effective July 1, 2021, for a five-year term.

As members of the 91亚色 community know, Professor Zwick has served with great distinction as Interim Dean of the Schulich School of Business since July 1, 2020. Prior to that appointment, he had served as the School鈥檚 Associate Dean Academic with broad responsibilities for teaching and learning innovation and recognition, program development, academic policy, student services, and international relations; and earlier as director of the School鈥檚 BBA/iBBA program. He had also represented the School on Senate and the Senate Executive Committee, as well as serving on the Joint Committee on Affirmative Action. He has been a member of the full-time faculty in Schulich鈥檚 Marketing program since 2002 and is also a member of the Graduate Program in Communication and Culture.  

Professor Zwick holds a PhD in Marketing from the University of Rhode Island, and master鈥檚 degrees from the University of Memphis and the University of Cologne/DSHS. His research encompasses areas of marketing and responsible business, including consumer behaviour, database marketing, consumer surveillance, and marketing and sustainability. His work has been published widely in marketing, communication, media culture and sociology venues, and his expertise is frequently called upon by the media. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on digital marketing, leadership skills, and the philosophy of knowledge in the social sciences. 

As Interim Dean, Professor Zwick has been leading the School鈥檚 development at the forefront of technological innovation in management education. He has been working with colleagues within and beyond the School to advance its global brand and its reputation for excellence in research, teaching, and delivery of an exceptional student experience. These initiatives have included the launch of a new Research Excellence Fellowship program and further development of experiential learning. He has engaged faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as external stakeholders, in articulating directions and priorities for the School going forward. His commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion is evident in initiatives to address systemic barriers for students, including collaboration with other leading Ontario business schools to provide enhanced mentorship and support; diversification of the curriculum; and the formation of the School鈥檚 DEI Working Group to consultatively develop recommendations to address Black and Indigenous racism. 

I look forward to continuing to work closely in the coming years with Professor Zwick and his colleagues in the Schulich School of Business at this important time in the School鈥檚 evolution, as it builds on its significant successes and outstanding reputation to lead in innovation and transformation in business education in Canada and internationally.

Today marks the first annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This new day of remembrance and reflection falls on what has been previously known as . The day is intended to provide space for ongoing discussions of truth and reconciliation, and time for us to pause and reflect on the continued legacy of inter-generational trauma caused by the Indian Residential School system in Canada. 

Residential schools operated in Canada from 1831鈥1996. Indigenous children were taken from their families and communities, often around this time of year, and brought to residential schools across the country. Many of these children never returned home. 

With the recent discoveries of unmarked graves at residential schools in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and a large number of investigations still underway, we grieve with the survivors, the families of those who were lost, and Indigenous communities everywhere for the immense trauma and loss caused by the residential school system.  

In light of the truths we are faced with, as a place of higher education and learning, we must take time to acknowledge our role in a colonial system of education, and our responsibility to uphold the recommendations put forward in the  (). Today we encourage you to wear orange in honour of the victims and survivors, to learn more about the residential school system and its ongoing legacy, and to consider the actions you can take individually or collectively to support reconciliation efforts.  

We hope that you will be able to  from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we pause to remember the victims and survivors of residential schools, to reflect on reconciliation in action at 91亚色, and to acknowledge and honour the strength and resilience of Indigenous community members.  

If you are not able to join us, we encourage you to take time to explore 91亚色鈥檚 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation website, attend another one of the events taking place across the university community, and commit to learning and setting actionable goals for reconciliation.  

Let us all identify ways to decolonize our practices and systems, and to learn, understand, and teach about the ongoing impacts of Canada鈥檚 colonial history. 

We know that this day, as well as its events and messages, may trigger trauma for many Indigenous members of our community, especially those who are survivors or with close personal or family ties to experiences in the residential schools, and we encourage all of our community members to please be kind to one another.听Support is available for survivors and those affected through the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society at 1-800-721-0066 or on the听24-hour听crisis line at 1-866-925-4419.听There are also a variety of supports available to the 91亚色 community, which are listed on the听听and through the听.听

Cette journ茅e de comm茅moration et de r茅flexion remplace l鈥檃ncien  Elle vise 脿 fournir un forum pour des discussions sur la v茅rit茅 et la r茅conciliation ainsi qu鈥檜n temps de r茅flexion sur l鈥檋茅ritage continu des traumatismes interg茅n茅rationnels caus茅s par le syst猫me des pensionnats autochtones au Canada. 

Ces pensionnats ont exist茅 au Canada de 1831 脿 1996. Les enfants autochtones 茅taient enlev茅s 脿 leur famille et 脿 leur communaut茅, souvent 脿 cette 茅poque de l鈥檃nn茅e, et emmen茅s dans des pensionnats dans tout le pays. Beaucoup d鈥檈ntre eux ne sont jamais rentr茅s 脿 la maison. 

Avec la d茅couverte r茅cente de s茅pultures anonymes dans des pensionnats en Colombie-Britannique, en Saskatchewan et au Manitoba, et avec un grand nombre d鈥檈nqu锚tes non r茅solues, nous partageons le chagrin des survivants, des familles de ceux qui ont disparu et des communaut茅s autochtones du monde entier r茅sultant des immenses pertes et traumatismes caus茅s par le syst猫me des pensionnats.   

Des responsabilit茅s nous incombent en tant qu鈥櫭﹖ablissement d鈥檈nseignement sup茅rieur et d鈥檃pprentissage et nous devons prendre le temps de reconna卯tre notre r么le dans un syst猫me d鈥櫭ヾucation colonial et respecter les recommandations formul茅es dans les .
