Indigenous Climate Leadership and Self-Determined Futures

What is the Indigenous Climate Leadership and Self-Determined Futures Project?

Indigenous Climate Leadership and Self-Determined Futures, led by Dr. Angele Alook, is a multi-year project grounded in the understanding that Indigenous leadership is essential to meaningful climate action. Since 2022, our team has worked to both understand and strengthen Indigenous climate governance through relationships, reciprocity, and intergenerational learning.
Using Indigenous research approaches, we have engaged Indigenous Elders, youth, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders through gatherings, land-based activities, interviews, and storytelling. Through this work, we have heard from climate leaders about their visions for the future and received teachings that deepen our understanding of the links between the climate crisis and colonialism, the importance of an ethic of care in climate work, the power of intergenerational knowledge sharing, and the need for global solidarity across Indigenous nations. These teachings reaffirm that Indigenous knowledge is essential to life-affirming, holistic climate solutions.
Our research spans local to global spaces, including participation in multiple UNCCC COP meetings and community gatherings across Canada. Along the way, we have cultivated a nurturing and meaningful community committed to doing better for the Land, the waters, and all our human and more-than-human relatives.
This toolkit honours the stories that have been shared with us and showcases the depth, breadth, and impact of Indigenous climate leadership.
