Horizon Europe is the European Union's research funding framework for 2021-2027. With a budget of €95.5 billion, it is the world largest research and innovation funding program. The framework has three main pillars: Pillar 1: Excellent Science, Pillar 2: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness; and Pillar 3: Innovative Europe.
Canadian institutions are now eligible to apply for research funding through Horizon Europe.
Pillar II
As of 2024, Canada is associated with Pillar II, which aims to advance scientific excellence, foster innovation, and address societal challenges through collaborative research. Being associated means that Canadian researchers are able to apply for funding through Pillar II opportunities, providing the chance to not only access new research funding, but also expand their research networks, elevate their international research profile and contribute to impactful research.

Pillar I
Canadian institutions can also participate in Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships as hosts for the outgoing phase of an MSCA Global Fellowship. In these fellowships, an eligible researcher based at a European host institution undertakes a research placement of 12–24 months at a host organisation in a non-associated third country, such as Canada. Funding is provided by the European Commission through the fellow’s European host institution, while 91ÑÇÉ« serves as the overseas host and training environment.
