The at YCAR hosted the U.S.-based BTAA e-School Korean Studies group in late August for their annual planning meeting.

鈥淲e had very interesting conversations with the BTAA group and learned a lot about their consortium of universities and Korean Studies course-sharing, said KORE Director Ann Kim (Sociology).

The BTAA Korean Studies e-School is based at the University of Michigan鈥檚 Nam Center for Korean Studies and led by its director, Youngju Ryu. , BTAA (Big Ten Academic Alliance) comprises 14 universities, and they utilize the consortium to share Korea-related courses across campuses in real time, using video conferencing technology. The program diversifies course offerings and expands enrollments in Korean studies across the Midwest, while providing opportunities for collaboration in teaching and curricular development. It is funded by the Korea Foundation and is in its eleventh year of operation.

Congrats to our Faculty Associates who received reductions in their course load from the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Service Course Load Reduction Program to further 91亚色鈥檚 commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment that values the contributions of diverse voices. Lisa Davidson (Anthropology), Mehraneh Ebrahimi (English) and Radhika Mongia (Sociology) are among the eight recipients from across the university. Created as part of the 91亚色 Faculty Association Collective Agreement, this initiative provides an annual fund of $100,000 to support service related to EDI by faculty members who self-identify as Indigenous and/or members of racialized groups. By reducing recipients鈥 course loads, the programs provide them with additional time to advance or implement aspects of 91亚色鈥檚 Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy. Congratulations to Amy Choi, the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Sangdeok Woo & Mrs. Kwisoon Lim Woo Memorial Graduate Award. A doctoral student in Sociology, Amy鈥檚 research interests include internalized racism, critical consciousness, public policy, anti-Asian racism, and the model minority stereotype.

For her MA thesis, Amy examined the lack of critical consciousness of anti-Asian racism among East Asian international students at the University of Toronto. For her PhD, she is interested in furthering her understanding of internalized racism among East Asian Canadians, especially among Korean-Canadians. Her goal is to generate recommendations and policies that combat Asian racism.

Amy Choi

The Award was created to support graduate students undertaking research on the topics of Korean history, culture or society. Dr. Woo, one of Korea's most distinguished scholars in Legal Medicine, laid a foundation for the development of National Institute of Scientific Investigation in that country. He was also a dedicated attending professor for 30 years at his alma mater, Yonsei University in Seoul.

YCAR offers awards for research, fieldwork and language training. The next deadline is 03 February 2025. More information on eligibility or to apply is available at this link.

With Faculty Associate (Design), Dr Chu is recipient of a YCAR Research Collaboration Fellowship. The duo is co-editing a book project, A Hong Kong Comics Studies Reader.

On 1 February, Dr Chu gave a public lecture titled 鈥溾 The lecture examines the depiction of nostalgia for 1980s and 1990s Hong Kong in three graphic memoirs: How Blue Was My Valley (2006) by Hok-tak Yeung, Sheung Ha Wo Che (2009) by Rainbow Leung and Fu Chong Chok Lok (2011) by Ko Sing. Hong Kong nostalgia encapsulates a poignant longing for bygone eras characterized by the city's distinctive urban landscape, much of which has undergone profound transformation in the continual process of urban development. Drawing from the analysis, Dr Chu illustrates how the personal childhood narratives and depiction of communal spaces evoke the collective memories of shared experiences. Bridging the realms of autobiographical reflection and communal remembrance, graphic memoirs play a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of Hong Kong鈥檚 cultural memories amidst ongoing transforming urban landscape.

Dr Chu will be at YCAR until 25 February 2024.

Her intersectional examination of commodification in the Asia-Pacific earned Joddi Alden an Excellence in Philippine Studies/ Filipinx Diaspora Studies writing and research-creation award. Alden, a YCAR Graduate Associate and doctoral student in Sociology, is a recipient in the PhD papers category.

Her paper鈥擟apitalism鈥檚 Race: An Intersectional Examination of Commodification in the Asia-Pacific鈥攅xamines gendered and racialized processes in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region deeply embedded within global capitalist systems that are particularly reliant on the commodification of women鈥檚 bodies in two key industries: the fashion as well as the domestic worker industries. She argues that women鈥檚 bodies, and the social reproduction that they perform, are commodities that are critical in shoring up capitalism and its effects, both regionally and globally. She draws from multiple data sources, including her own experiences working in the fashion and beauty industry in the region.

Joddi-Alden-New

The Philippine Studies Group (PSG) invited course directors and teaching assistants to nominate exceptional student papers and research-creation outputs. Alden is the third 2023 award recipient; all of the winning papers will be published in a special New Voices in Asian Research series later this term.
