Grading and Evaluation

Grades reflect how well you have understood the course topics relative to the professor's expectations and learning outcomes.

It is important to remember that grades are not based on how much time you spend studying or how other students in the class perform. It is possible to spend a lot of time on a subject and still struggle to grasp it. Conversely, if many students achieve the expected learning outcomes, many can receive high grades.

Although professors announce grades, they are not official until approved by the Faculty. Sometimes, a professor may be asked to justify or adjust the grade distribution before final approval.

At 91ÑÇÉ«, you can view your grades in two ways: through your online grade report or by requesting an  from the Registrar’s Office.

Note: only courses taken at 91ÑÇÉ« are included in the grade point averages (in other words, transfer credits does not count towards the GPA). The percentages indicated are not part of the official grading scheme and are meant only to be used as guidelines. The letter-grade system is the fundamental system of assessment of performance in undergraduate programs at 91ÑÇÉ«.

Note: all of the above-noted grades are used to calculate averages and credits.

Passed courses

  • A course is considered passed when a student earns a grade of D or better
  • A passing grade means the course can count toward degree requirements.
  • A passed course can also be used to meet prerequisites for future courses.

Failed courses

There are two failing grades in the undergraduate grading scheme:

  • E – Marginal Failure
  • F – Failure

Both E and F are failing grades, which means:

  • The course does not count toward degree requirements
  • The course does not satisfy prerequisites, even if the grade is close to passing
  • Students may be required to repeat the course if it is needed for their program or as a prerequisite for a higher‑level course

A Pass/Fail grading option is available to Faculty of Science undergraduate students under specific conditions.

Eligibility

Students may elect to take up to 12 credits on a Pass/Fail basis if they:

  • are in good academic standing,
  • have completed at least 24 credits, and
  • submit a request to the Registrar’s Office before the last day to drop a course without receiving a grade.

Newly admitted students (fewer than 24 completed credits) may request the Pass/Fail option for up to 3 credits.

Courses Not Eligible for Pass/Fail

Students may not use the Pass/Fail option for:

  • courses used to satisfy major or minor requirements (including for-credit practica not already designated Pass/Fail),
  • required courses outside the major,
  • courses taken to meet certificate requirements,
  • required 1000‑level science courses for students in
    • Faculty of Science
    • Lassonde School of Engineering
    • Faculty of Health
  • courses that fall under the Transfer Credit Guidelines, which must be taken on a graded basis unless the host institution only provides Pass/Fail assessment.
  • In other words: Only elective courses may be taken using the Pass/Fail option.

Request Rules

  • Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be approved.
  • Students approved for Pass/Fail may request to return to graded status up until the last day of classes for the term of the course.
  • Requests must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office before the last day to drop a course without a grade.
Students are encouraged to review and their degree requirements before submitting a request.

Grading Options & Course Repeats

  • Students may repeat a passed or failed course up to two times, for a maximum of three attempts at any course.
  • Only the latest attempt will count for degree or certificate credit.
  • All repeats are subject to the University’s .

If a student cannot successfully complete all three allowed attempts of a course due to serious, documented extenuating circumstances, they may submit a petition requesting an exception. Common petition options include:

1. Repeat a Course for Degree Credit
Used when a student has already reached the maximum number of attempts.

2. Drop Course(s) Past the Published Deadline (Late Withdrawal)
A student may request to have earlier attempts removed from credit/GPA consideration due to exceptional circumstances. Approval is not guaranteed.

Approval for any petition is not guaranteed. Find full details on required documentation and processes under petitions.

GPA Requirements & Excellence

A minimum overall GPA of 4.00 (C) is required in order to be eligible to graduate in an undergraduate bachelor program.

Students in a bachelor program who have passed 90 credits in accordance with Faculty and program requirements, but whose cumulative overall grade point average is below 4.00 (C), may attempt to raise their average by taking up to 12 additional credits, to a maximum of 102 credits.

  • Regulations on equivalent and excluded courses apply.

Honours students are classified by year according to the number of credits they have obtained. Subject to the major department’s selection criteria, students will be registered in the Honours program if, upon completion of each academic session, they meet the minimum cumulative overall grade point average required for their year level.

Students who have taken 84 credits, and who wish to proceed in an Honours program must have a cumulative grade point average of 5.00 overall.

To graduate in an Honours program requires successful completion of all Faculty requirements and departmental required courses and a minimum cumulative credit-weighted grade point average of 5.00 (C+) over all courses completed, subject to the exception.

Note: some programs may require a higher standard – consult the .

Member of the Dean’s Honour Roll: A sessional credit-weighted grade point average of 7.50 or higher on a minimum of 24 credits, or, in the final year of study, a minimum of 18 credits.
