Academic Decisions

91ÑÇÉ« divides the academic year into two academic sessions:

  • Fall/Winter Session
  • Summer Session

At the end of each academic session, students receive an Academic Decision on their . This decision indicates your academic standing and whether you may continue in your program (for example, whether you are eligible to proceed).

You are in good academic standing and may continue in an Honours program if you meet your major’s GPA requirements.

5.00 – 5.99

May Continue in Honours

(except where higher GPA is required)

You meet the minimum GPA for Honours, but some majors require a higher major or science GPA.

4.00 – 4.99

May Proceed Only in an Ordinary Program and/or Academic Warning

You do not meet the GPA required for Honours. You may continue in a Bachelor (Ordinary) program and may be placed on academic warning.

2.50 – 3.99

Academic Warning or Required to Withdraw

Your academic standing is at risk. You must meet academic warning conditions or you may be required to withdraw for 12 months.*

You must withdraw from your studies for 12 months before applying for reactivation.

Grade Report Academic Decisions (Detailed Explanations)

The following explains the specific academic decisions and codes that may appear on your Grade Report.

  • Your GPA is below the minimum required to continue in an Honours degree for your major.
  • You will be automatically placed in a Bachelor (Ordinary) program in the same major.
  • If you are in a double major, you will remain in your first major.
  • If you wish to choose a different major, please review information.
  • You do not meet the minimum major GPA of 6.00 required for this major.
  • You must select a new major.

Biochemistry, Computational Mathematics, Environmental Science, Neuroscience, or Space Science

  • You must choose a different major in a Bachelor program.
  • Enrolment is blocked until your program has been changed.
  • Refer to for instructions.
  • You are blocked from enrolling in courses for the upcoming session.
  • You must book an advising appointment with the appropriate department.
  • Applies to students in a Bachelor (Ordinary) program who do not meet the minimum GPA required to graduate.
  • You may complete up to 102 credits in order to raise your GPA.
  • Once you have completed 102 credits, you will automatically be blocked from further enrolment.
  • At that point, if you still do not meet the required GPA for graduation, please contact Science Academic Services.

Academic Warning

  • An academic warning indicates that your academic performance is at risk. If you fail additional credits or do not improve your GPA, you may be ineligible to proceed.
  • For full details, refer to the Rules and Regulations for the Faculty of Science in the .

Academic Warning Conditions

  • Students on academic warning must meet one of the following:
  • Achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 4.00 within the next 24 credits taken, or
  • Earn a sessional GPA of at least 5.00 in the session in which the 24th credit is completed, and in each subsequent session, until the cumulative GPA reaches 4.00.
  • Additional regulation:
  • Students whose cumulative GPA on at least 24 91ÑÇÉ« credits is below 2.50 will be required to withdraw for 12 months.

Students whose academic record shows marked weakness may be required to withdraw for 12 months. During this time, students are encouraged to reflect on their academic goals and address factors that may have affected their performance.

Required Withdrawal Regulations

  • GPA below 2.50:
    Students with a cumulative GPA below 2.50 on at least 24 credits must withdraw for 12 months.
  • GPA is below 4.00 and equal to or greater than 2.50: 
    students who have received an academic warning for a cumulative grade point average below 4.00 must satisfy the academic warning conditions as specified above or be required to withdraw for 12 months.

Returning After Withdrawal

  • Students may apply for reactivation after the required withdrawal period by submitting a request through .
  • Students who return after a required withdrawal (or by petition to the Petitions Committee) receive a Debarment Warning.

A debarment warning indicates that failure to improve your academic performance may result in debarment for two years.

Conditions

Students must:

  • Achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 4.00 within the next 24 credits, or
  • Earn a sessional GPA of at least 5.00 in the session in which the 24th credit is completed and continue to earn at least 5.00 until the cumulative GPA reaches 4.00
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 4.00 or higher

Failure to meet these conditions will result in debarment from the University.

  • Students who are debarred may be considered for re‑admission only if they provide convincing evidence of academic readiness.
  • Applications are normally not considered for at least two years following debarment.
  • Applications must be submitted to the .
  • Students who are re‑admitted receive Academic Probation.
  • Applies to students returning after debarment or by petition.
  • Students must meet debarment warning conditions or will be debarred again.
  • You may not register for the Fall/Winter session unless you are readmitted.
  • After one year, you may reapply to the Faculty of Science through the Office of Admissions.
  • Readmission is not guaranteed.
  • Applies to BSc, iBSc, BASc, and BSc (Tech) students.

Students admitted in Fall/Winter 2001–2002 or later must meet the following GPA requirements to graduate:
