Passings: Dan Olsen /yfile/2026/06/10/passings-dan-olsen/ Wed, 10 Jun 2026 20:30:38 +0000 /yfile/?p=407420 Dan Olsen, a print media technician in the School of Arts, Media, Performance & Design, supported generations of students across four decades.

The post Passings: Dan Olsen appeared first on YFile.

]]>
Dan Olsen, a print media technician who served the (AMPD) for more than four decades, has died at 71.

When Olsen finished his bachelor of fine arts in 1979 at 91亚色, instead of leaving, he made the University his home.

For 41 years, he worked in the Department of Visual Art and Art History (VAAH) as a technician within the print media area, overseeing the daily operations of a specialized space where AMPD students learn printmaking, the process of transferring inked images from prepared surfaces onto paper using presses and other tools.

Dan Olsen
Dan Olsen

Much of the role happens behind the scenes 鈥 including coordinating studio schedules and maintaining equipment and supplies. Because these processes rely on dedicated equipment, materials and controlled working conditions, students depend on an experienced technician to help them develop their skills and complete coursework.

Olsen exemplified these responsibilities, playing an active part in student learning by guiding them and supporting their work in the studio.

鈥淎s technician, teacher and mentor, he supported and encouraged generations of students, creating a cooperative and dynamic environment where they could realize their goals,鈥 says Barbara Balfour, professor emerita, who worked with Olsen for over two decades. He even helped them do so when ideas pushed the limits of conventional approaches or required creative problem-solving in the studio.

鈥淒an always seriously entertained students鈥 unorthodox technical questions, only discouraging them when health and safety considerations prevailed,鈥 she says.

For Daryl Vocat, the current print media technician in VAAH, that was part of who Olsen was, and something that continues to inspire his own approach to the job. 鈥淚 remember Dan as someone who was happy to lend a hand, and as someone who made the studio a welcome and friendly place,鈥 he says.

The long-term impact of Olsen鈥檚 generosity, patience and technical knowledge was recognized through honours like the AMPD Award of Excellence Staff Recognition Award in 2019 for his career efforts and the annual Dan Olsen Print Media Award, named after him when he retired in 2020.

Olsen鈥檚 impact is recognized in other meaningful ways. David Scott Armstrong, an associate professor who worked with Olsen for 17 years, says when he meets former students who were part of VAAH鈥檚 printmaking community, a frequent question arises. 鈥淭hey ask, with a glimmer of fond recollection in their eye, 鈥業s Dan still there?鈥欌

He may no longer be, but his influence continues to be felt in the studio and in the work of the many artists he supported over the years.

鈥淒an brought so much to this community over the years, and all who knew him 鈥 students, artists, teachers, colleagues 鈥 are grateful for all that we have learned from him,鈥 says Armstrong. 鈥淔aculty and course offerings came and went, but Dan was there through it all. He was a vital presence and spirit that made 91亚色's printmaking community strong and enduring.鈥

Beginning June 22, 91亚色鈥檚 University Information Technology (UIT) team will enrol all University-owned administrative staff computers in approved management platforms.

As cyber threats targeting higher education continue to increase, 91亚色 is taking steps to strengthen the security standards of its devices. Effective June 22, all University-owned computers must meet a defined security baseline that specifies the minimum set of protections to safeguard University systems, research and data.

For most users, there will be little to no change. Users will be notified ahead of enrolment, which can be completed remotely. Enrolment of faculty member computers is planned to begin in late fall. This change is being implemented in accordance with the new Procedure听on Use and Security of University-Owned Computing Devices.

Management platforms do not provide access to personal files, research materials, emails, browsing history or user activity. 91亚色 remains committed to protecting academic freedom and the privacy of its community while strengthening institutional cybersecurity. For more information, visit the University-owned device FAQ.

Those with questions or requiring assistance can contact askit@yorku.ca or reach out to Faculty IT units for research-specific concerns.

Zeripha Moses, associate director of student success and advising at 91亚色鈥檚 Markham campus, has been recognized as the recipient of the 2026 Lynda Tam Guiding Light and Legacy Award for outstanding contributions to student success, mentorship and community-building across the University.

The annual award honours the legacy of Lynda Tam, a long-serving leader at 91亚色 who was the first assistant dean, students, in the (AMPD).

Through innovation and compassion, Tam shaped student services, advising and peer mentoring programs, creating a lasting impact on the student experience at 91亚色.

Presented each year by 91亚色鈥檚 Advising Community of Practice and Peer Mentor Community of Practice, the award recognizes a student services, advising or peer leadership professional who embodies Tam鈥檚 creativity, imagination and commitment to guiding others while advancing student service excellence.

Lynda Tam was a guiding force who generously shared her wisdom and experience with those of us in the advising community at 91亚色,鈥 says Moses. 鈥淩eceiving this award is deeply meaningful to me, as it reflects the values she championed, by putting students at the centre of everything we do.

Moses was selected by the award committee for her exceptional leadership and dedication to fostering inclusive, student-centred environments. Her work has had a meaningful impact on both students and colleagues, reflecting a deep commitment to collaboration, mentorship and the continuous improvement of student-facing programs.

In his nomination, Adam Duncan, assistant director of student recruitment at Markham, highlighted Moses鈥檚 ability to bring people together and inspire those around her. He described her as a trusted colleague whose thoughtful approach, empathy and strategic insight have strengthened programs and supported the success of students across 91亚色.

Colleagues who supported the nomination emphasized Moses鈥檚 role as a connector and mentor, noting her consistent efforts to elevate the student experience and create spaces where individuals feel welcomed, valued and empowered to thrive. Like Tam, Moses is recognized for her ability to guide others with care and clarity while advancing meaningful, lasting change.

As part of the award, each year a piece of art is commissioned from a current AMPD student. This year, Nathan Adachi was selected, creating a a landscape that depicts a sunlit pond that holds personal significance to them, with a lighthouse in the distance. 鈥淭he composition reflects the cultivation of a flourishing environment shaped by the presence of a guiding light, celebrating Tam,鈥 says Adachi. 鈥淭he lighthouse symbolizes how her presence continues to stand tall and her influence continues to guide others.

For Moses, the award and artwork are not individual honours. 鈥淭his recognition also belongs to the many colleagues across our community who work so diligently to support our students and make a positive difference in their lives,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t is truly an honour to be part of the advising community at 91亚色.鈥

91亚色 Libraries pilots partnership to preserve printed scholarly record /yfile/2026/05/29/york-libraries-pilots-print-partnership-to-preserve-scholarly-record/ Fri, 29 May 2026 18:45:21 +0000 /yfile/?p=406887 91亚色 Libraries will test a new share-only partnership with听a repository for shared print holdings to expand joint stewardship of low-use materials.

The post 91亚色 Libraries pilots partnership to preserve printed scholarly record appeared first on YFile.

91亚色 Libraries is the first institution to pilot a new partnership model with Keep@Downsview, a shared print repository based in Toronto, marking a shift in how academic libraries collaborate to preserve and manage low-use print collections.

Through a newly signed agreement with the University of Toronto, on behalf of the members, 91亚色 Libraries (YUL) will participate as a 鈥楽hare Only Partner.鈥 The pilot introduces a model that expands opportunities for collaboration, stewardship and shared ownership of print collections.

YUL will collaborate with the University of Toronto to identify low鈥憉se titles already preserved by Keep@Downsview at the U of T Downsview facility. 91亚色 will then transfer these local holdings to the jointly owned collection, supporting preservation, access and responsible collection management.

This work not disrupt the user experience; YUL users will continue to have seamless access to these titles and can make requests through for pickup at their preferred location. YUL will share more details on the as the pilot proceeds.

鈥淭his new model allows us to collaborate in a practical and innovative way,鈥 says Joseph Hafner, dean of Libraries at 91亚色. 鈥淏y aligning our holdings with materials already preserved by Keep@Downsview, we are strengthening shared stewardship of the scholarly record while creating flexibility within our local collections to better serve the 91亚色 community.鈥

Keep@Downsview is a shared print program that supports member academic libraries through secure, environmentally controlled storage and co-ordinated collection management. Located in Toronto, the facility is governed by its members and is designed to ensure long-term preservation of scholarly print materials that are infrequently used while reducing unnecessary duplication across institutions.

Current Keep@Downsview partners include the libraries of U of T, McMaster University, the University of Ottawa, Queen's University, Western University and Memorial University. 91亚色鈥檚 participation as a Share Only Partner expands the initiative鈥檚 collaborative framework without altering its shared governance structure.

For YUL, the pilot reflects an ongoing focus on responsible stewardship, collaboration and innovation in library services.

鈥淭his pilot underscores our commitment to working collaboratively with peer institutions to steward shared collections for the benefit of current and future scholars,鈥 says Larry Alford, chief librarian, University of Toronto Libraries. 鈥淚t is an important step in exploring new partnership models that respond to evolving user needs and changing pressures on library collections.鈥

Hafner says the opportunity reinforces YUL鈥檚 commitment to the teaching, learning and research mission of the University 鈥渢hrough dynamic collections, inclusive spaces and a strong focus on access, sustainability and scholarly communication.鈥

This partnership agreement will be assessed as a pilot, with YUL and Keep@Downsview working together to evaluate its effectiveness and potential for broader adoption.

91亚色 recognizes Pride Month as a celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and contributions, but also as a reminder of the ongoing struggles shaping these experiences locally and globally.

At a time when the rights and freedoms of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and other sexually and gender-diverse communities are increasingly contested, Pride calls for reflection, action and celebration. The rollback of legal protections, policing of gender expression and marginalization of queer and trans voices highlight the fragility of progress and the uneven realities of safety and recognition. These conditions compel us to move beyond symbolic affirmation toward sustained, evidence-informed action.

91亚色鈥檚 community continues to advance research, teaching and creative work that deepens understanding and supports meaningful change. For example, 91亚色 nursing faculty are strengthening gender-affirming care practices through global learning initiatives, while other 91亚色 researchers are examining systemic inequities affecting gender-diverse communities, including new national evidence highlighting housing insecurity among transgender and non-binary Canadians.

Our commitment requires actively challenging structures of exclusion and fostering environments where diverse identities are not only protected but affirmed. This includes recognizing intersectionality and valuing the knowledge produced by queer and trans scholars as essential to academic excellence. 91亚色鈥檚 leadership in this area is reflected in the work of scholars such as Professor Emeritus Michael Gilbert, whose contributions to gender theory and advocacy were recognized with the 2025 Transgender Pioneer Award.

Throughout Pride Month, flag ceremonies will take place across all three campuses on June 8, 2 to 3 p.m. at Keele (Vari Hall), Glendon (Centre of Excellence) and Markham (first-floor atrium). Flags will be unfurled at Keele and Markham and displayed at Glendon, reaffirming 91亚色鈥檚 commitment to welcoming and inclusive spaces. Community members are encouraged to explore additional events and resources through 91亚色鈥檚 Pride programming.

91亚色 will also participate in Pride celebrations beyond our campuses, including the 91亚色 Region Pride Parade on June 13 in Newmarket () and the Toronto Pride Parade () on June 28. These opportunities reflect our broader engagement and solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Pride Month reminds us that building an inclusive university requires ongoing effort. 91亚色 remains dedicated to advancing policies, programs and practices that support 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff and faculty, while addressing systemic barriers to equity and belonging.

As we mark Pride Month, we invite all members of the 91亚色 community to celebrate, learn and reflect on how each of us can help create a more inclusive and affirming environment throughout the year.

Thank you. Merci. Miigwech.
