The cancellation of events for Pride Month poses a huge loss to the LGBTQ community. 鈥淧ride Month is a chance to recognize and celebrate LGBTQ lives, communities, histories and we are continuing to do that this year but it鈥檚 going to look a lot different鈥 Faculty of Education Associate Professor Jen Gilbert said. 鈥淧ride parade and the festivities are a chance for young people to get out and receive some affirmation.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 important to remember that Pride always was and continues to be a protest against police violence originally led by Black trans women. When we look at what鈥檚 happening in the world today, I think we have to see that that鈥檚 also what Pride stands for鈥
鈥淭he ongoing protests against police violence are part of what Pride should aspire to be鈥 Gilbert added. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have the parades but we do have this really vibrant, inspiring protest culture going on now, I hope young people feel inspired by that.鈥
