This study examines the status quo and issues of global competence education in North American universities. It starts with introducing the definitions of global competence developed in basic education sector, highlighting their transcendent nature via likening them to the stride from international education to global education. From there, the study goes on to identify a dozen cases of practicing global competence education in the US and Canadian universities.

Expanding Horizons in Freiburg: A 91亚色 Education Student鈥檚 Transformative Exchange Journey - This past summer, 8 Bachelor of Education students took their learning beyond the classroom through 91亚色鈥檚 Summer Exchange to Freiburg, Germany. For four months, they studied at the University of Education (PH Freiburg) alongside students from across Europe, Africa, and Asia, gaining fresh perspectives on teaching and learning. Read more

2024-2025 Don Galbraith Pre-Service Teacher Award of Excellence winners - Congratulations to BEd students, Lauren Cunningham, Elvina Patapau, and Anthony Pereira who were announced as recipients of the 2024鈥2025

Planetary Health Film Night in Hamburg, Germany 鈥 Professor and Director of the Young Lives Research Lab, Kate Tilleczek and her colleague Mark Terry, were invited speakers at the Planetary Health Film Night in Hamburg, Germany. Their presentation featured participatory films created by Indigenous youth in Belize, Ecuador, and Ghana, exploring the intersections of food security, health, and climate change鈥揾ighlighting how local knowledge can youth storytelling can inspire global action for planetary health

Global Collaboration in Action: 91亚色-TEC Partnership Continues for a Third Year - For the third consecutive year, Course Director Andrea Valente, supported by 91亚色 International, is collaborating through Globally Networked Learning (GNL) with an instructor from Tecnol贸gico de Monterrey (TEC), Mexico. Students in EDST 2450A (Fall 2025) are engaging in a one-month online project with TEC peers, enhancing their intercultural awareness and international learning experience. 

Congratulations to alumna Emily Burgis on being awarded the CSEA-SCEA鈥檚 Rita L Irwin Art Teacher Dissemination of Knowledge Award - On October 16th, Emily received the CSEA-SCEA鈥檚 Rita L Irwin Art Teacher Dissemination of Knowledge Award. On that day, she joined 4 other honorees on a panel to catalyze a national conversation organized by the CSEA-SCEA, sharing their inspirations and concerns about learning with visual ideas, media, and practices that impact students, teachers, and communities. Each of the 5 recipients were identified by their peers and provincial art educators鈥 association as outstanding art teachers and community leaders dedicated to lifting up students and colleagues alike

Katrin Kohl, Co-Chairholder, UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability will be speaking at an event of the Ban Ki-Moon Centre on October 30, 2025. The event is open for online participation.

Congratulations to PhD candidate Jason Holmes on the successful defence of his Ph.D. Dissertation Challenging Equivalency: A Two-Site Analysis of English Language Proficiency Pathways and Academic Achievement in Canadian Higher Education.

This dissertation investigated the relationship between English Language Proficiency (ELP) pathways and academic achievement among international undergraduate students in two Canadian universities. The study makes a significant original contribution to literature by challenging the long-held assumption that standardized ELP tests鈥攊.e., IELTS and TOEFL鈥攁nd English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs are equivalent in predicting English ability and academic achievement for international students

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Office

2025-2026 Practicum Placements - In late September, DHH students in the full-time program and final year of the part-time program began their practicum observation dates. Students in the GTA visit the Toronto District School Board鈥檚 (TDSB) Intensive Support Programs (ISP), while those in other regions and provinces visit similar programs in their communities. These visits take place from late September through early November to support students in preparing for their practicum placements in mid-November

DHH Program Information Night - The DHH Program will be hosting an Information Night on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. as part of our annual student recruitment activities. This event will take place over Zoom and allow prospective applicants the opportunity to meet our faculty, learn about the program, and ask any questions they may have. Details and registration are available on the DHH program website

Sick Kids Implantable Hearing Technologies Workshop - DHH audiology faculty attended the on October 15. A number of current and former students of the DHH program were also in attendance. Topics included genetics of hearing loss and the current state of gene therapy; assessment and management of vestibular disorders; updated candidacy criteria for implantable devices; trauma-informed care in hearing health care; and more. There were a number of workshops on new and emerging technologies, including Bluetooth connectivity for processors, focusing on connecting and troubleshooting in the classroom, and new implantable devices to be released this year

CIICA CI Advocacy in Action 2025 Conference - DHH faculty attended the in Brussels, Belgium on October 16 and 17. Professor Connie Mayer's presentation "Where Science Impacts Literacy" was part of a panel on Parents as Advocates. In addition, funding from a SSHRC grant provided support for the conference. Faculty members were able to network with 120 delegates from 32 countries on topics of global funding, resources, and access for those who have or could benefit from cochlear implants. Other topics included sustainability in ear and hearing care; advocacy and impacts of hearing loss on families; low- and middle-income global access to CI; CI for aging populations; resource planning for advocacy activities; and the nexus of research and science with practical user experience

French Language Enhancement Certificates - Two new 6-week online certificates are available to help B.Ed. students and experienced teachers strengthen their French language proficiency

New Instructor Portal -  A new instructor portal within the registration database now provides instructors with direct access to administrative information and resources

Expanded Moodle Resources - Moodle resources continue to expand, offering enhanced instructional and pedagogical supports to strengthen teaching capacity

Religious Education Certificate - The Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools certificate course supports second-year B.Ed. students in preparing for Catholic Board interviews and advancing their career goals

AI in Education - Beginning in Winter 2026, the Office is integrating the responsible use of AI in K鈥12 classrooms into its AQ courses, highlighting its role as a teaching and learning tool

Wikondiek School Donut Fundraiser 鈥 On October 22, FESA hosted a Krispy Kreme Donut Fundraiser to support the Wikondiek Primary and Secondary Schools in Kenya, our long-time partners through 91亚色 International. FESA continues their fundraising efforts and to accept donations online or in the FESA office throughout the year, with all proceeds sent to Wikondiek at the end of the school year in April.

SHIFT 2025: FESA Professional Development Conference 鈥 Saturday, November 15, 2025 - The Faculty of Education Students鈥 Association (FESA) invites all future educators to participate in this year鈥檚 annual conference, featuring Ontario鈥檚 Poet Laureate, Matthew-Ray Jones (aka 鈥淭estament鈥), as the keynote speaker.
