Megan Davies: Into the House of Old Travelling Exhibit
91亚色 professor Megan Davies innovative research approach led to the creation of one of Canada's first public pandemic commemorations. Her work illuminates the national humanitarian crisis that took place in Canadian care homes, where 81% of COVID deaths took place over the first wave of the pandemic. A poignant multimedia installation, acknowledges the thousands of seniors who died in care homes or endured months of isolation and the staff who faced an overwhelming burden of care.
On January 14, 2022 the COVID in the House of Old project became public with an online launch and a new website featuring a powerful storytelling exhibit, a haunting audio-visual representation of aggregate death stats, and a .
"The exhibit features a series of storytelling chairs 鈥 7 in total 鈥 each held by an individual whose life was indelibly altered by the rapid spread of COVID through long-term care," explained Professor Davies, "Daughters, sons, and grandchildren tell tales of devastating loss. Survivor residents speak of painful separation. Workers describe confusion, exhaustion and terrible stress. The final exhibit chair has been set aside for the Wikwemikong Nursing Home on Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory in Northern Ontario where Indigenous and non-Indigenous Elders are honoured, respected and cared for with love.鈥
Beginning in the spring, a series of in-person exhibits will take place at BC's Kwantlen Polytechnic University, local libraries, community centres and educational spaces. Funding is being sought to take CIHO across the country. Learn more about the project by .
Research Administrator Pat Ellis Retiring after 30 years at 91亚色
Deznah (Pat) Ellis, Faculty Research Administrator is retiring from 91亚色 after 33 years of dedicated service. Pat joined the Dean鈥檚 Office from Atkinson following the creation of LA&PS, with dedicated support for internal and external grant administration. Her support and professionalism have been deeply appreciated by colleagues in the Dean鈥檚 Office and across the Faculty. Pat鈥檚 last day of work was December 23, 2021. The LA&PS office wishes her all the very best as she embarks on this new chapter of her life. We also welcome Yi (Judy) Zhu who has joined the LA&PS Research Office as Faculty Research Administrator in January, in support of Pat's portfolio.
Judy comes to LA&PS with 12 years of experience at 91亚色, with roles in Financial Services and CBSO/Facilities Services at 91亚色, supporting the financial administration of capital projects, budget planning/ forecasting, payroll, and PCard reconciliations, among other duties. In her new role, Judy will be the primary post-award point of contact for researchers whose home unit is Administrative Studies, Anthropology, Economics, English, Equity Studies, French Studies, Human Resource Management, Information Technology, Languages, Literature and Linguistics, Public Policy & Administration and Social Work. LA&PS Research to Impact Webinar Series Launch
The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies is pleased to announce the launch of a new webinar series that will help equip researchers with tools to share their work with the right audience and funders.
The LA&PS Research to Impact Workshop Series, organized by the LA&PS Research Office, will begin on February 10, 2022. It is designed for LA&PS faculty members, emerging and established scholars but is open to all 91亚色 researchers who wish to expand their research鈥檚 audience.
In its inaugural year, this webinar series will be virtual and will explore some of the following topics:
- How to facilitate the grant application process and improve application success rates,
- Identifying and building capacity around KM tools and,
- Increasing awareness about 91亚色 and LA&PS research services, resources and support.
The first event, 鈥淩esearch to Impact: Leveraging Earned Media鈥, will discuss how to interact with media and navigate the public arena. Panelists will include experts from 91亚色 Media Relations. for this webinar.

**New Program Announcement**: LA&PS Research Leaders Release Program (RLRP)
LA&PS has launched a new initiative in the Faculty: The LA&PS Research Leaders Release Program (RLRP). The RLRP complements existing programs providing research-based course load reductions to LA&PS Faculty Members, including the Research Release Program in the 91亚色-YUFA collective agreement.
LA&PS Faculty Members may submit requests for 1.0 or 1.5 FCE, which must be taken in the next academic year. The RLRP Applications deadline is 9:00 AM Eastern on February 7, with results communicated on or around March 15. Both the application form and instructions, plus the FAQ are now available on our internal funding opportunities page, under 鈥淭eaching Supports, Course Releases and Fellowships鈥.

Online Safety and Security for Researchers Guidelines
The Canadian Journal of Communication (CJC) has put out Online Safety and Security considerations for authors, aiming to start a discussion about how institutions can best prepare and support researchers who fall victim to online harassment campaigns.
The University Offers International Travel Guidance
Following on the Government of Canada's lifting of the advisory for fully vaccinated Canadians to avoid all non-essential travel, 91亚色 offers international travel information for faculty, staff and students.

UN SDGs essential to 2022 Academic Innovation Fund grant applications
The ,听created in 2010, supports the implementation of projects that advance 91亚色鈥檚 institutional priorities outlined in the University Academic Plan, Strategic Mandate Agreement and the Institutional Integrated Resource Plan.
AIF proposals should be submitted to the Office of the Dean, where they will be reviewed, approved and ranked. Faculties are encouraged to set internal application deadlines that will enable the proposals to be provided to the Office of the Associate Vice-President Teaching and Learning by email at听avptl@yorku.ca听by 4 p.m. on听Friday, Feb. 11, 2022.
Centre for Feminist Research 'Kickstarter' Grants

With funding from the Office of the Vice-President, Research Innovation, the Centre for Feminist Research at 91亚色 invites proposals for feminist research projects led by Black, Indigenous and racialized scholars with a preference for early career researchers and/or researchers who have not previously held a major grant. The Principal Investigator must hold a PhD at the time of application and must be associated with the Centre for Feminist Research, either as a Faculty, Research, or Community Associate, Visiting Scholar, or Postdoctoral Scholar.
Proposed projects may produce, but are not limited to, the following outcomes:
- Journal article or special issue
- Conference or speaker series
- Artwork or exhibits
- Workshop series or other community events
Please submit a maximum of two-page proposal outlining your project with an additional one-page budget sheet detailing the funds requested. Proposals should include:

Canada-China Initiatives Fund
The 91亚色 Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) invites applications from 91亚色 faculty and graduate students for the Canada-China Initiatives Fund call for proposals.
YCAR is now accepting applications for the 22 January 2022 deadline for activities such as:
- Workshops or conferences 鈥渁t 91亚色鈥 (or in which 91亚色 plays an institutional partnering role) that bring together researchers from 91亚色 and elsewhere that are focused on CCF themes

Congress 2023: Reckonings and Re-imaginings theme consultation
A survey is open to solicit feedback on the theme of Congress 2023. The survey is brief and can be completed through .
Proposed theme considerations:
- 91亚色 has signalled its commitment to a theme that incorporates dialogue on social/racial justice issues and centers the experiences, knowledge and cultures of Black and Indigenous communities in particular.
- The theme must be broad in scope and align with the University Academic Plan, including its commitment to elevate 91亚色鈥檚 contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.
- The theme should build on historical and emerging research strengths at 91亚色 and allow 91亚色 scholars to take lead planning roles in the conferences of their associations

Announcing new CFI and Mitacs collaboration
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and Mitacs are working together to provide researchers with new opportunities to collaborate with innovators across all sectors. As part of this initiative, they are inviting Navigator-listed facilities to leverage Mitacs鈥檚 extensive network to identify specific private-sector organizations, industries, or other partners they would like to collaborate with.
Navigator-listed facilities will also have even greater potential for discovery as the Navigator becomes an essential tool in Mitacs鈥檚 mission to connect industry with research-based solutions to business challenges.
You can help researchers at your institution reach potential partners by encouraging them to list their eligible facility on the Navigator. Since its launch in 2013, the Navigator has helped hundreds of innovators locate and connect with publicly funded research facilities that are open to collaboration. Visit 听for more information.
SSHRC Storytellers challenge
- The deadline for student submissions is Monday, January 24, 2022, 5:00 p.m. (EST)
In November, SSHRC launched its ninth annual . This has been a success over the years thanks in large part to your help in promoting it. The Storytellers 2022 Toolkit听has more information on the challenge and some suggested social media post ideas.
The challenge is open to all students, graduate and undergraduate, enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Their task is to tell the story, in up to three minutes or 300 words, of a SSHRC-funded research project鈥攖heir own or a professor鈥檚.
A jury will select the top 25 finalists, who will receive a $3,000 cash prize and specialized training in research communications with their fellow finalists from across the country. A second jury will select the Final听Five winners to receive an additional $1,000 and be recognized at the 2022 virtual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. As an incentive, an additional $1,000 will be awarded to the Engagement prize winner: The finalist who most creatively and consistently promotes their submission, the submissions of other Finalists, and the contest generally.

NSERC-National Science Foundation 鈥 Collaboration on quantum science and artificial intelligence
NSERC and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced the first joint collaborative research funding opportunity focusing on . The objective is to focus specifically on discoveries and innovations in the areas of artificial intelligence and quantum science. Collaborative research proposals will be accepted to the NSF programs listed below:

NSERC Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is accepting applications to t. The I2I Program provides funding for four phases (Market Assessment, Phase I, Phase IIa and Phase IIb). Objectives include:

IDRC Research Awards 2022-2023

This year IDRC will offer research awards related to these development areas or themes: Climate-Resilient Food Systems, Democratic and Inclusive Governance, Education and Science, Ethics in Development Research, Global Health, Policy and Evaluation, and Sustainable Inclusive Economies.
If your research proposal is selected, you will join IDRC as a Research award recipient for a period of 12 months from 1 May 2022 to 30 April 2023 with a salary in Canadian dollars between CA$42,033 to CA$48,659 to undertake research on the topic you have submitted. Ontario Research Fund - Research Excellence Grant (ORF-RE Round 11)
The Ministry of Colleges and Universities has launched Round 11 of the Ontario Research Fund - Research Excellence (ORF-RE) program. The ORF-RE program provides funding for eligible direct operating costs as well as a portion of indirect costs for research projects of strategic value to the province. Following the release of the in March听2021, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is pleased to announce the extension of the . This initiative aims to continue helping the Canadian social sciences and humanities research community better understand data management, and incorporate data management considerations into research practices.
The initiative will fund at least 10 meritorious proposals per competition for the November 2021, February, May and August 2022 cycles, to support the research community鈥檚 development, adoption and dissemination of research data management standards, practices, tools and skills appropriate to their field.

Mitacs Accelerate SME Discount
Mitacs has just launched a . Faculty members that are collaborating with a company/Not for Profit (NFP) that has fewer than 500 employees, can get a discounted rate for the company contribution. The main points of the program are:
- The contribution is $3,750+HST from the partner + $11,250 from Mitacs (instead of the standard $7,500+HST from partner and $7,500 from Mitacs) for a 4-6 month internship unit.
- Submission deadline is February 1st, 2022, or while quantities last.
- 1 discounted unit per named intern
- Partner has to be 1-499 employees, including NFPs

NSERC - Alliance Grants: Option 2

The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public.
