Early Career Scholars: Kate Reid

Kate Reid is a Postdoctoral Fellow on a MITACS/SSHRC-funded project, “Connecting Culture and Childhood: Using Musical Arts Programming to Promote Belonging for Young Newcomers in the GTA” or  CCCP. The project is in collaboration with , Associate Professor in the Children, Childhood, and Youth program at 91��ɫ.

CCCP is a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, and multigenerational partnership with community partners such as Toronto Public Libraries and a children’s choir for newcomers and refugees in the GTA. Together, they have been finalizing a children’s storybook called “” and an accompanying song called “Music is For Everyone to Share”. CCCP responds to the endangerment of musical cultures around the world while documenting how arts-based programming models impact refugee children’s social integration and well-being from a child-centered perspective.

“One of the main goals of our work is to provide community support, mentoring, and professional skills to newcomer and refugee children to express themselves creatively through music, songwriting, and storytelling,” explained Dr. Reid. “We hope that our findings will inform community programming for young newcomers and refugees that builds on their creative capacity, underscores their contributions to Canadian culture, and supports their wellbeing as they resettle in various communities across Canada.”

With support from professional musicians, sound engineers, and music producers, Reid uses collaborative ethnographic songwriting, a research creation method they developed, to co-compose and record songs with individual children from the choir. These child-led creative outputs will be added to a developing archive of songs composed and recorded by newcomer and refugee children. Learn more about the project by .

Applications are now open for the second round of our Supporting Research Community’s ACU Early Career Researchers (ECR) Training Grants. The grants are meant to organize and deliver training for their early career researchers, including doctoral candidates. The training will equip researchers with essential skills to enable them to succeed in their careers.

Research office staff, or any other staff member who leads on providing training for early career researchers, can apply. Successful applicants must make one output from the training available to be shared with other Supporting Research Community members. If your university has previously been awarded an ECR Training Grant, you are not eligible to apply again. WSIB Grants Program: Systematic Review Funding Opportunity

SSHRC Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative

SSHRC has officially launched a new Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative (RGD) as a result of the Federal Budget 2021 announcement. This Initiative aims to support partnership research to inform actions that address social disparities related to race, gender and other forms of diversity. With new funds outlined in Federal Budget 2021, SSHRC will soon launch the . This strategic initiative will enhance society’s understanding of the causes and persistence of systemic racism and discrimination, and the impact of oppression on Canadians and our communities, and will help develop strategies to support greater justice and equity. SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grants - Emerging Asocial Society

SSHRC has launched a Knowledge Synthesis Grants (KSG) competition to assess the state of research knowledge on the topic of “”, under SSHRC’s  initiative. France-Canada Research Fund (FCRF) - New Scientific Collaboration Support Program

• Value: $8,000 - $15,000 CAD per project for travel and living expenses.

The French Embassy in Canada recently announced a Call for Proposals (CFP) for the France-Canada Research Fund (FCRF) New Scientific Collaboration Support Program.  This CFP is open to all disciplines. A special focus for 2022: The FRCF 2022 will reserve up to 5 grants for research projects related to the Impact of global change on Oceans and Coastal regions. More information on the focus theme is available in the FFCR 2022 guidelines. This program provides funds for new scientific projects jointly developed by French and Canadian teams that have never worked together before.

All 91��ɫ applicants are now required to submit their FINAL application electronically to Embassy of France’s Scientific Office at assistant.science@ambafrance-ca.org AND to ORS at mthakoor@yorku.ca.

Only five proposals will be accepted by the agency from each university. Mitacs has just launched a . Faculty members that are collaborating with a company/Not for Profit (NFP) that has fewer than 500 employees, can get a discounted rate for the company contribution. The main points of the program are:

1. The contribution is $3,750+HST from the partner + $11,250 from Mitacs (instead of the standard $7,500+HST from partner and $7,500 from Mitacs) for a 4-6 month internship unit.
2. Submission deadline is February 1st, 2022, or while quantities last.
3. 1 discounted unit per named intern
4. Partner has to be 1-499 employees, including NFPs
