DARE Project: A systematic literature review on the application of explainable artificial intelligence in healthcare

This experience has combined many of my passions, particularly public service, policy, and governance. By exploring an unfamiliar field and finding intersections with other areas that I am passionate about, I will use the skill set I have acquired - particularly analysis, critical thinking and communication - for the rest of my academic career and beyond. I have also gained important knowledge that I will be able to contribute to classroom discussions at 91��ɫ, and also beyond the classroom in everyday life.

Project Description:

My DARE research project involved exploring the role of various explainable AI techniques and their application in the healthcare domain. Explainable artificial intelligence is a growing field with the goal of making black-box algorithmic models that are inherently opaque more transparent. This is specifically crucial in the high-stakes nature of the healthcare domain, where decisions can yield consequences - both positive and negative. Although the field of explainable artificial intelligence is rapidly growing, there is a lack of research that explores role of explainable artificial intelligence in healthcare and its clinical utility, including the advantages and disadvantages of its deployment. I was tasked with formulating various research questions, conducting database searches, and synthesizing all of the information into a systematic literature review that highlights the deployment of explainable artificial intelligence in various healthcare settings, including neurology, oncology, and radiology, and how it can successfully be implemented to ensure more transparent, accessible, and equitable outcomes for patients and healthcare providers.
