Carlo Fanelli, an associate professor of global work and labour studies and Chair in the Department of Social Science, was featured in the Toronto Star, offering insight into the unusually complex union drive unfolding at Toronto City Hall. He explains that disputes over who the true employer is, who belongs in the bargaining unit, and the nature of the work itself are key factors prolonging the case. Fanelli also notes that the upcoming municipal election could significantly disrupt the process and potentially reshape the outcome.
Fanelli teaches and conducts research in the areas of work and labour market restructuring, labour and employment law, public policy, political economy and socio-economic inequality. Previously, he served as Interim Director of the Global Labour Research Centre (2024-25), and Coordinator of the Work and Labour Studies program (2017-2022).
