A recent article in the Financial Post looks at the upcoming review of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and at communities like Wallaceburg, Ontario, which experienced manufacturing and job losses following earlier free-trade agreements. U.S. demands mean that Canadians may deal with higher costs or other concession to maintain the benefits of free trade.
Richard Leblanc, professor in the School of Administrative Studies, says the U.S. could decide to come after Canada’s water energy, telecommunications and mineral markets, or remove environmental restrictions. Leblanc says that we cannot depend on tenuous relationships with U.S. leaders since they may decide to dictate the rules around trade.
Leblanc is a leading expert in corporate governance and accountability. He is lawyer, public speaker and consultant and has taught corporate governance at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Ontario and an academic fellow of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes.
