IP Osgoode and the (IPIC) are thrilled to announce the winner of the sixth annual edition of :

1. In the Law Student category, the judges selected Julia Johnson as the winnerfor this year’s Challenge:

Julia won for her entry: "". Julia Johnson is a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law.

2. In the Graduate Student category, the judges did not select a winner for this year’s Challenge.

3. In the Professional category, the judges did not select a winner for this year’s Challenge.

We were pleased to receive submissions from across the country on a wide range of subjects, including: moral rights, fair dealing, trade-marks, technological neutrality, IP rights in databases, sufficiency of disclosure, doctrine of sound prediction, copyright reform, and internet intermediary liability.

Julia will be receiving a prize of $1000 and, in addition to havingher winningarticle showcased here on the IPilogue, the article will be considered for publication in the Canadian Intellectual Property Review (CIPR)or the Intellectual Property Journal (IPJ).

The Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and IP Osgoode are delighted to announce our 2014 Canadian writing challenge in intellectual property law.

We are excited to be running our sixth annual writing challenge. Our goal is to further enhance thoughtful and well-researched intellectual property public policy scholarship and discussion. We encourage a broad range of perspectives and topics can be from within the various categories of intellectual property law including patents, trade-marks, industrial design and copyright.

There are three categories for entrants this year:

  1. Law student category (LL.B, J.D., BCL, and LL.L students)
  2. Graduate student category (LL.M, S.J.D.and PhD students)
  3. Professional category (legal and business professionals who have been practicing 7 years or less, including patent agents and trade-mark agents)

The winner from each of category will be eligible for:

  1. A prize of $1,000 (CAD)
  2. Publication on the IP Osgoode website (www.iposgoode.ca)
  3. Consideration for publication in the Canadian Intellectual Property Review and/or the Intellectual Property Journal.

The deadline is Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at 5 p.m. (ET)

1. In the Graduate Student category, Pascale Chapdelaine won thanks to her entry: “”. The author is a Ph.D. in law candidate at Osgoode Hall law school.

2. In the Professional category, the winners were Michael Crichton and Kiernan A. Murphy who co-authored: "". The authors are lawyers atGowling Lafleur Henderson LLP.

3. In the Law Student category, the judges did not select a winner for this year's Challenge.

We were pleased to receive submissions from across the country on a wide range of subjects, including: entertainment law, fairy tales, Internet governance, parody, philosophy, the public interest, trade mark, and traditional knowledge.

The winners will be receiving a prize of $1000 and have their articles considered for publication in the Canadian Intellectual Property Review (CIPR) and the Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy (OHRLP).

We were very pleased to receiveentriesfrom a broad spectrum of backgrounds and institutions from across Canada(for example, students from 9 different law schools participated). When you look around the globe one cannot help but realize that Canadian writing in IP has much work ahead. For starters, we need much more of it, on all areas of IP, from a range of viewpoints.

The Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and IP Osgoode hope to kick start some of this! IPIC and IP Osgoode are delighted to announce a new Canadian writing challenge in intellectual property law. Consistent with both of our missions, our goal is to further enhance thoughtful and well-researched intellectual property public policy scholarship and discussion. We encourage a broad range of perspectives from a Canadian, comparative and/or international perspective. Topics can be from within the various categories of intellectual property law including patents, trade-marks, industrial design and copyright.

To help advance such scholarship from within the classroom and beyond, we have established three categories:

  1. Law student category (LL.B, J.D., BCL, and LL.L students)
  2. Graduate student category (LL.M, S.J.D.and PhD students)
  3. Professional category (legal and business professionals who have been practising 7 years or less, including patent agents and trade-mark agents).

We offer some exciting prizes. Each winner will be eligible for:

  1. A prize of $1000 (CAD)
  2. His/her work to be published on the IP Osgoode website ()
