The Graduate Admissions team was successfully integrated from its previous unit into FGS. This transition centralized graduate recruitment and admissions support, enhancing coordination, accessibility, and consistency for prospective students. Providing Personalized Support for Prospective Graduate Students
Individualized 1:1 advising sessions offered dedicated time for prospective students to ask questions and gain clarity on next steps. These personalized meetings help applicants feel informed, confident, and supported as they navigate the admissions process, fostering a welcoming introduction to the graduate community.

Enhancing Connections for Incoming Graduate Students

Graduate Student Support Group
Launched in 2025, the Graduate Student Support Group provides a safe space for students to connect, share experiences, and access peer support. The group allows participants to gain perspective on common graduate challenges, exchange wisdom and resources, and realize they are not alone in their academic journey. Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, and the drop-in, year-round format ensures ongoing accessibility and support throughout the graduate experience.

Equipping Graduate Students through GradForward Series
The inaugural GradForward series, a new approach to graduate orientation, offered 30-minute virtual sessions covering scholarships, graduate funding, academic integrity, professional skills, student affairs, and portal use. Accessible via Zoom, these sessions equipped students with practical knowledge and resources to navigate graduate studies successfully and build a strong foundation for academic and professional growth.

Celebrating Achievement and Inclusion

Associate Director honoured with 91亚色鈥檚 Excellence in DEDI Award
Richolette Freckleton received the Excellence in DEDI Award from 91亚色 in recognition of her exceptional commitment to advancing decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion across the graduate community. Her leadership led to the creation and funding of a new scholarship for BIPOC part-time students and the launch of a workshop that connects Black graduate students with faculty mentors 鈥� concrete actions that expand access, promote representation, and foster a stronger sense of belonging and support for equity-seeking scholars at 91亚色.

She said PhD life can be overwhelming and challenging, but 鈥渞eceiving a fellowship from a food anthropology community inspires me to learn from the work of others and stay motivated by the diversity of ideas.鈥�

Birbiri holds a BSc degree in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts from 脰zye臒in University and an MA in Sociology from Bo臒azi莽i University both in Istanbul, Turkey. She was trained as a chef and worked in professional kitchens in Turkey, Hungary and Brazil. Birbiri later discovered the interdisciplinary world of food studies and focused her work on the food cultures at the intersection of geography and history.

Food studies is a broad concept, Birbiri said, and includes a lot of community engagement and activism practices.

鈥淚 am an active member of the , the , and the . I connect with fellow scholars who work on food studies, including but not limited to food banks, food sovereignty, food literacy, food and disability, agri-food systems, and historicizing foodways,鈥� she said.

She finds those engagements helpful for two reasons. First, she said, she gets involved in scholarly debates around food studies. 鈥淚t is an interdisciplinary field which allows us to work together with wonderful scholars from different backgrounds鈥攁nthropology, environmental studies, disaster management, sociology, geography and beyond.鈥�

Secondly, she said, the current food crisis is a part of a larger economic crisis in the world and community engagement and activism enable her to talk about these crises and discuss ways to deal with them, 鈥渁nd feed each other, both methaphorically and literally.鈥�

Birbiri has worked on scientific research projects, a multinational food company, and local food cooperatives, which broadened her perspective on the political economy of food. She enjoys cooking for her friends and family, street photography, hiking trips, and mushroom hunting.

Courses in the MATS combine theoretical knowledge with practical application. On the translation practice side, the program offers courses such as Literary Translation, Audiovisual Translation and Subtitling, Translation and Tourism, and Medical Translation. The more theoretical courses include Translation Studies and Research Methods; others focus on topics such as Experiences of Translation in the Americas, Balzac Translated-Translating Balzac, Politics and Translation, Ideology and Translation, Translation and Ethics, Translation and Mobility, and Translation and Digital Technologies, to name but a few.

The Master in Translation Studies can be completed in two years and offers three options: courses only, courses plus a Major Research Paper, or courses plus a thesis. The program is designed to serve full-time students as well as professionals who wish to obtain a graduate degree in Translation Studies while continuing to work. As such, all courses are scheduled in the evening, and some are offered online.

The MATS is a funded program. Once admitted, most eligible full-time domestic students receive a guaranteed funding package for the duration of the program. Note:聽No funding is available for international students.

91亚色鈥檚 Top 30 Alumni Under 30 program celebrates exceptional young leaders who are using their talents, education, and passion to make meaningful change. Among this year鈥檚 recipients, 12 individuals are from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and each one is a powerful example of how our alumni are already shaping a better, more inclusive and sustainable future.

Purpose-Driven Visionaries: 12 Graduate Studies鈥� Alumni Making Change

Jocelyn Cadieux (MES 鈥�20) is building healthier cities, one policy at a time. As Chair of the MES Planning Alumni Committee (MYPAC) and a dedicated policy planner, Cadieux champions walkable, transit-friendly communities. His long-range planning work makes cities not only more sustainable but also more livable鈥攈elping current and future generations thrive.

Lauren Castelino (MES 鈥�24) is leading the charge toward environmental justice. As founder of the Green Career Centre, a non-profit that supports underrepresented youth entering green industries, Castelino is opening doors for the next generation of environmental leaders, empowering them to shape the policies and projects that will define a greener tomorrow.

Jordan Crocker (MBA 鈥�22) exemplifies what it means to lead with heart and purpose. A lawyer and advocate, Crocker has worked with Rainbow Railroad to help 2SLGBTQIA+ asylum seekers find safety and freedom. Through mentorship and legal support, he builds bridges to brighter futures for marginalized individuals globally.

Jaskaran Grewal (MMgt 鈥�18) brings a unique blend of business, legal, and tech expertise to his role as a corporate lawyer. Passionate about the venture ecosystem, Grewal advises emerging companies on navigating digital innovation, growth, and regulation. Outside the boardroom, he鈥檚 a dedicated volunteer, supporting non-profits with strategic counsel and community outreach.

Alexander Grynszpan (MBA 鈥�21) is advancing human rights and access to justice. In addition to his work in cross-border capital markets law, Grynszpan volunteers with international NGOs supporting asylum-seeking youth. His legal advocacy ensures that vulnerable populations are heard, represented, and protected.

Svetlana Mamaeva (MBA 鈥�21) is on a mission to close the gender gap in financial literacy. A first-generation Canadian and founder of FinPowered, Mamaeva has led over 100 free financial education workshops in Canada and Moldova, empowering women to take control of their financial futures. Her book, Money On Her Terms, is an extension of her belief that economic empowerment leads to societal transformation.

Tinotenda Mutsvangwa (MMgt 鈥�21) sees finance as a vehicle for empowerment. As a financial advisor at CIBC and co-founder of Incorporate Zim, Mutsvangwa supports Black excellence and entrepreneurship across borders. His work helps individuals and communities build wealth, independence, and lasting change.

Blessing Owusu (MEd 鈥�24) believes that every student deserves to feel seen, valued, and included. Through her research on Black student experiences and her children鈥檚 book Abena鈥檚 Adventures: A Taste of Home, Owusu is reshaping classrooms with narratives of representation, belonging, and identity鈥攖ransforming how equity is taught and lived in education.

Aniket Prabhudesai (MASc 鈥�22) is taking Canadian innovation to space鈥攍iterally. As part of the technical team at MDA Space, Prabhudesai is working on the Canadarm 3 and other next-generation space robotics. His contributions are advancing humanity鈥檚 reach and Canada's legacy in space exploration.

Pankaj Puar (MSc 鈥�21) stands at the cutting edge of science and medicine. As a senior medical student at the University of British Columbia and PhD candidate at the University of Toronto, Puar plays a key role in global clinical trials. His research into novel therapies is already shaping how diseases are treated, and lives are saved around the world.

Anjelica Ramsewack (MMgt 鈥�21) is using storytelling to dismantle barriers and create impact. As co-founder of Engage, Ramsewack empowers BIPOC youth to become changemakers through accessible education and creative policy communication. Her work brings clarity, voice, and opportunity to communities that need it most.

Nathan Yiu (MDEM 鈥�21) turns compassion into action in times of crisis. As Emergency Planning Advisor for the City of Vaughan and a global volunteer with the World Organization of the Scout Movement, Yiu empowers communities to prepare for the unexpected鈥攊nspiring a culture of resilience, service, and shared responsibility.

These 12 remarkable individuals are more than achievers鈥攖hey are architects of a better world. Across industries, across borders, and across lived experiences, they embody the values of leadership, inclusivity, and innovation that define 91亚色鈥檚 graduate community.

The 91亚色 community is celebrating the life of Ravichandiranesan (Ravi) Ponnudurai, a dedicated student, passionate environmental advocate, and a friend to many. At 57 years old, Ponnuduai鈥檚 unexpected passing while visiting Sri Lanka leaves a deep void, but his story is one of resilience, transformation, and profound impact.

Born in Thirunelvely Village, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, in February 1967, Ponnudurai鈥檚 journey was shaped by the determination to build a better future. Arriving in Canada in 1990 as a Tamil refugee during a time of conflict, he faced challenges with unwavering optimism. Settling in Toronto, Ponnudurai pursued studies in Computer Science and Mathematics at Carleton University while also navigating a career in real estate and other professional pursuits 鈥搘ith over 20 years of experience in STEM sectors.  But it was his shift toward environmental studies that defined his later years, marking the beginning of a profound legacy.

Ponnudurai came to 91亚色 in 2018, driven by a desire to make a real difference in the world. His commitment to environmental sustainability became central to his life鈥檚 work. By 2022, he completed his Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) before becoming immersed in a Master鈥檚 degree (MES), researching ecological footprints and biodiversity. Even as he moved to Napanee, Ontario, Ponnudurai鈥檚 dedication never wavered鈥攈e commuted for hours each week to continue his studies and engage with his academic community.

His colleagues and mentors recall Ponnudurai as a person whose enthusiasm for sustainability and his genuine care for others left a lasting impression. Peter Timmerman, Ponnudurai鈥檚 supervisor, described him as more than just a student鈥攈e was a friend and a collaborator. 鈥淩avi was an integral part of our community, engaged in everything from tree planting to extraordinary support for our international students,鈥� Timmerman reflected. 鈥淚 got to know Ravi when he was a student in my Environmental Ethics class, and then as his advisor, supervisor and friend. He was a wonderful, caring student and I considered him a colleague.鈥�

Neha Basnet, a fellow MES peer, remembered Ponnudurai as 鈥渙ne of the kindest and most considerate people ever known.鈥� She marveled at his dedication to his studies, despite the long commute. 鈥淎s a classmate, he was dedicated and motivated, always bringing positive energy to discussions. Despite having to commute three hours to attend class, he rarely missed a lecture. His presence and insights made every discussion lively and engaging.,鈥� Basnet recalled.

Desmond Asiedu, another MES colleague, reflected on Ponnudurai鈥檚 impact on those around him. 鈥淩avi was wonderful. Too wonderful, in fact,鈥� Asiedu said. 鈥淗e genuinely cared about people and always wanted them to be happy. His memory will stay with me forever, and his life is a firm example of how to live and treat others.鈥�

Ponnudurai鈥檚 dedication extended far beyond his studies. He was deeply involved in initiatives that ranged from tree-planting campaigns to advocating for urban gardens and wildlife conservation. His passion for sustainability was matched only by his desire to improve the lives of others. "Ravi鈥檚 love for bringing people together for a common cause, especially in protecting biodiversity and greenspaces, was inspiring," said Professor Eric Miller, who knew Ravi through the Ecological Footprint Initiative. His life was a testament to the power of education, community, and the willingness to embrace change for the greater good. Ponnudurai 's story is not just one of personal success, but of a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him to act with kindness, purpose, and a commitment to the environment.

Liette Gilbert, director of the Environmental Studies graduate program, described Ravi as 鈥渁 gentle presence in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change (EUC) and specifically in the MES program. His humility and kindness were felt by all around him. Gilbert added. 鈥淗is dedication to knowledge, community and the environment was however fierce.鈥� To note, Ravi was also an active bird watcher and nature photographer.

Beyond his academic work, Ponnudurai was a constant source of positivity and support for his peers. Philip Piluris, a fellow MES student, remembered him for his warmth and generosity. 鈥淩avi had the biggest heart,鈥� Piluris said. 鈥淗e always found ways to make life better for those around him. His passion for sustainability鈥攆rom urban gardens to wildlife conservation鈥攚as matched only by his love for family and friends. His quick wit, boundless kindness, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.鈥�

As a changemaker, Ponnudurai鈥檚 involvement in various initiatives, including the Las Nubes Study Abroad Program and a GSO-funded program entitled the SDGs in Action: Student Challenge in 91亚色 International, exemplified his desire to make a tangible impact on the world. Ana Maria Martinez, associate director at Las Nubes EcoCampus, shared how his leadership inspired both peers and educators alike. 鈥淗is work ethic and commitment to making a difference were exemplary, serving as a model for other students鈥� she said.

Professor Eric Miller, who directed his work in the Ecological Footprint Initiative, spoke about Ponnudurai鈥檚 passion for both the environment and for bringing people together. Miller said. 鈥淚 am grateful for our time together and grateful for seeing him enrich the lives and experiences of other students. And forever impressed by how eager he was to participate in on-campus and Toronto-area events even though he lived hours away.鈥�

Ponnudurai鈥檚 life was more than just a collection of academic achievements鈥攊t was a testament to the power of passion, kindness, and a genuine desire to make the world a better place. His legacy is one of positive change, not just in the environment, but in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of working with him.

On behalf of iGoCitizen鈥攁 student-led initiative that evolved from the SDGs in Action Student Challenge, co-founder Christiane Marie Canillo, recalled Ponnudurai as one of the pillars of the iGoCitizen team. 鈥淗e played a major role in the success of our programs across several communities in Sri Lanka as the Director of Finance and Networking. Ravi connected many lives, bringing together advocates from all corners of the world to inspire conversations that lead to positive actions, she said.鈥�

The School of Information Technology provides the most current knowledge about information technologies and their application in modern organizations. The degree will prepare students for employment in a broad range of sectors such as health, business and education. MA

Our research-intensive MA is a uniquely focused but flexible graduate program, which combines theoretical-academic learning with practical research proficiencies and place-based knowledge about the Global South. Students are offered a full range of conceptual and methodological tools necessary for a deeper comprehension of the current issues and challenges of sustainable human development in a globalizing world. The MA is structured as a five-term program combining course work, fieldwork and internship/placement.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

With a profound commitment to environmental and social justice, the Graduate Program in Environmental Studies contributes to solving some of the most pressing socio-environmental issues of our times. Both the Master's and Doctoral degrees are designed to teach and empower diverse thinkers through multi-disciplinary approaches and hands-on learning opportunities by engaging in an extensive array of environmental concerns, approaches and actions to make positive change.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

The Master鈥檚 in Interdisciplinary Studies鈥攐ne of the first formalized graduate programs in Canada鈥攅nables highly motivated students to study within three distinct disciplines in order to deeply explore a particular problem or phenomenon. Students have the option to propose a research project and choose scholarly lenses from an intriguing range of interdisciplinary fields. The student鈥檚 unique area of inquiry may combine the fine arts, sciences, health, social sciences, engineering, humanities, law and more.
