Decolonization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Our mission is to promote an academic and social environment that is driven by principles of decolonization, equity, diversity, inclusion (DEDI) by fostering collaboration between students, alumni, community partners, faculty, and staff in the School of Global Health (SGH).

The School of Global Health seeks to ensure that principles and practices of DEDI are built into the core of our School鈥檚 vision and living culture.

The School has established an DEDI Coalition of Support that brings together students, alumni, staff, faculty members and community partners to advance an equitable and inclusive academic environment grounded in decolonizing principles.

This work began with open consultation sessions involving students, faculty and staff and culminated in the inaugural Coalition of Support meeting on March 2, 2022, where participants discussed values, a mission statement and priority action areas.

Students, alumni, staff, faculty members and community partners are invited to join the Coalition of Support by completing a . Participants will receive updates on opportunities to join meetings and contribute to the ongoing integration of DEDI into the School鈥檚 vision and culture.

To foster conversations that support DEDI, the School co-sponsors a seminar series on聽Decolonizing Global Health聽in partnership with the聽Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research. Additional events and consultations include a public lecture on equity, health and human rights and student circles designed to listen, learn and develop a collective platform for action (requires a Zoom sign-in).

Conversation Series

To ensure that the School of Global Health (SGH) is living up to principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, a coalition of support has been created to bring together students, staff, faculty members, alumni and community partners. The coalition's work will be driven by the principles and values of social justice, solidarity, accountability, and collaboration. Some of the coalition鈥檚 objectives include:

  • Fostering collaboration on action areas determined by coalition members to address inequity, discrimination, and social exclusion
  • Raising awareness and fostering discussions on DEDI topics and issues among students, staff, and faculty members
  • Supporting the development and/or maintenance of inclusive, diverse and decolonized services and programs for equity-deserving students

Coalition meetings will take place on designated Wednesdays during the academic year and outputs of group discussions will be shared on the DEDI webpage. Coalition membership is open to any global health student, staff, faculty member, alumni, or community partner who鈥檚 interested in advancing DEDI within the SGH!

The SGH DEDI Coalition of Support was convened on March 27, 2024. The primary focus of the meeting was to review and discuss a working draft of the forthcoming DEDI Action Plan for the School of Global Health. Participants also considered whether to formally adopt the draft Terms of Reference for the Coalition and outlined future priorities and next steps to support DEDI initiatives across the School.

The SGH DEDI Coalition of Support was convened on February 2nd 2023. After an introduction and recap of work to date, participants discussed options for the structure and logistics of the Coalition, how best to recognize membership in the Coalition, and establishing working groups on initial DEDI priorities. Participants agreed to pursue a formal committee structure with affiliation-based聽representation recognizing current students through the Global Health Student Association, staff and faculty through the School of Global Health Committee, and alumni and community through an organizational forum to be determined in the future. This structure is based on broad consultation over last two years, ensures representation from different stakeholders, and formally recognizes the importance of DEDI work through an inclusive structure that encourages collaboration. Initial working group priorities were identified as focusing on trainings & workshops and decolonizing the School of Global Health curriculum.
