France won the World Cup in 1998 with Zinedine Zidane; Athens hosted the Summer Olympics in 2004.
Titanic was a movie hit (1998); the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy came to cinemas (2001). The first Harry Potter book appeared in 1997 and the first Harry Potter movie in 2004, along with Pixar’s Incredibles movie (also in 2004).
Foreign films Life is Beautiful with Robert Benigni (1997) and ��é�� with Audrey Tautou (2001) had great success as well as Pirates of the Caribbean in 2006. Also very successful were Good Will Hunting (1997), The Matrix and The Sixth Sense (both in 1999) and Lost in Translation (2003).
Best Musicals were The Lion King on Broadway (1997), The Producers and Mamma Mia (both in 2001), Wicked in 2003 and Jersey Boys (2003).
This was also the decade of “the Macarena” by Bayside Boys Mix (1996), “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John (1997), “Believe” by Cher (1999) and “We belong together” by Mariah Carey (2005). This is the decade of The Spice Girls and boybands such as NSYNC, 98 Degrees and the Backstreet Boys, and of rapper Eminem.

During this decade, Maple Leaf Gardens closed and the Leafs moved to the Air Canada Centre; Wayne Gretzky retired; no Canadian team won the Stanley Cup during this decade.
Speed skater Cindy Klassen wins five medals at the Turin Olympics in 2006. Juno winners this decade include Shania Twain, Céline Dion, Sarah MacLachlan, Nelly Furtado, Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, Nickelback and Bedouin Soundclash.

2000 the YURA office is located in the West Office Building;
2001 YURA launches its Newsletter with John Becker serving as editor (2001-2004) followed by Barbara Tryfos (2005-2007)
2002 YURA offers fitness classes and organized walks and computer sessions; a YURA cookbook is published; it is noted that YURA has 475 members; YURA members are involved in the founding of the National Association CURAC
2003 William Small, founding member of YURA dies;
2005 the YURA membership fee increases from $15 to $20; the office location is now 101 Central Square; leadership by two co-presidents started in 2005 by Albert Tucker and Nancy Accinelli; the membership fee is raised from $15 to $20; the number of members grows to over 500; a YURA dining group is launched.
