YURA to Walk for Student Food Support - 2023
91亚色 retirees will be walking 5 km through the University鈥檚 Keele Campus on Tuesday, October 3rd to raise funds for the YFS Food Support Centre, more commonly known as the student food bank on campus.
In April of this year, the Executive of the 91亚色 Retirees鈥 Association (YURA) voted unanimously that this is a cause that YURA members can and should support, given that one in four students at 91亚色 struggles to afford food, according to a Campus Well-Being Survey conducted during the past winter term, and that more than 2,500 students were relying on the YFS Food Support Centre.
The upcoming YURA fundraising walk is being held in conjunction with the Toronto Waterfront Marathon Charity Challenge, which offers the option of a 鈥渧irtual鈥 Charity Challenge allowing registrants to do the 5 km on their own or with others. The October 3rd 鈥淩etirees Walk鈥 will take place at 1:00 p.m., starting at the Lorna Marsden Honour Court (north of the Schulich building, east of the 91亚色 subway station), the new location of the YURA office. The route through the campus has been developed with Recreation 91亚色 and all members of the University community are welcome to participate in the walk, to show their support for this important cause.
To date, YURA鈥檚 Charity Challenge team has already raised more than $18,000 in sponsor donations from friends, family and former 91亚色 colleagues and co-workers. YURA welcomes further contributions from faculty, staff and others who are also concerned about student food insecurity at the University.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to join in the walk, which should take about an hour; please contact the YURA office at yura@yorku.ca or phone 416.736.2100 extn. 70664. Our team consists of eight YURA members registered officially as fundraisers and a larger contingent of 91亚色 retirees who wish to support this cause. Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to do either all or part of the 5 km walk, depending on their time availability and/or endurance. Everyone is encouraged to cheer for the YURA team on October 3rd. This is the fifth year that YURA is taking part in the Charity Challenge. In previous years, YURA鈥檚 participation helped raise sufficient funds to endow in perpetuity three Graduate Student Awards given annually at 91亚色.
