Transfer credit students will have their academic record reviewed so that any credits not contributing to degree completion are excluded from eligibility assessments.

Please note: Transfer credit students may appear to exceed the credit limit. However, if you are considered a second-year student in your degree program at the time of application, you may still be eligible. We encourage you to speak with a Co-op Coordinator and submit an application.

No. We recommend reviewing the eligibility requirements to identify what is missing and applying once you meet all criteria. If you need support identifying when you can submit an application, we encourage you to join us during our regularly scheduled drop-in sessions.

The Co-op & Career Centre provides support for all students seeking summer, part-time, on-campus or full-time employment. We encourage you to take advantage of these services.

Students with extenuating circumstances may be able to submit an exception request or a petition.

A petition is a formal written request outlining exceptional circumstances that may justify an exemption or modification of a requirement or regulation. Submitting a petition does not guarantee approval and may not always be the most appropriate solution.

Please visit a drop-in session to speak with a Co-op Coordinator about your situation.

Most students are granted eligibility for at least two academic terms to search for a work term. After this period, eligibility may expire, resulting in loss of job board access.

Please check your co-op record sequence to confirm whether your status is 鈥淓ligible Work Term鈥 or 鈥淓ligibility Expired.鈥 If your eligibility has expired, but you  believe you still meet the eligibility requirements for the co-op program, please attend a drop-in session to speak with a Co-op Coordinator.

The Co-op & Career Centre offers career exploration and job search support for all students and recent graduates (up to two years post-graduation). Services include:

We strongly encourage you to make use of these services.

At this time, the co-op program is not open to students entering their final year of study.

Yes. Each Faculty has defined minimum and maximum work term requirements. Please refer to Co-op fees webpage for program-specific details.

In some cases, participating in co-op will extend your time to graduation.

Co-op and internship experiences are highly valued by employers and provide you with relevant work experience before graduation. Many entry-level roles require or strongly prefer candidates with prior co-op or internship experience.

By graduation, co-op students often compete for entry-level roles alongside peers who have completed an average of 12 months of work experience.

Yes. You remain an active full-time student during your work term as long as your co-op work term is officially registered and you are enrolled in the required co-op course(s). This confirms that your work term is integrated into your academic program.

If you require a proof of enrolment or status letter, please fill out the form on our Supporting Documents webpage. Please allow 5鈥10 business days for processing and submit requests in advance to avoid delays.

Once your work term is approved and recorded in the co-op portal, you will be automatically enrolled in the required co-op work term course(s) within the first month of your co-op.

Please refer to the application webpage for details on the specific course(s) required for your program.

Yes. Students are responsible for dropping any courses themselves before the official course drop deadline. Please also review the academic refund schedule when making changes to your enrolment.

Successful completion of the co-op program will be noted on your academic transcript.

To officially complete the co-op program, students must meet the minimum work term requirement of your Faculty. In general, this is two or three work terms.

If you complete only one work term, you will not receive the co-op designation. However, you will still benefit from valuable work experience, networking opportunities and skill development, and you will remain eligible to complete your degree.

If you receive a failing grade in a co-op course, please contact a Co-op Coordinator as soon as possible. They will review your situation and discuss available options.

The impact depends on when your work terms occur.

A summer work term may have minimal impact, while consecutive fall and winter work terms can extend a typical four-year degree by approximately one year.

Your overall timeline depends on your program, the timing of your work terms, and employer work term duration. Co-op is a structured commitment that may extend your degree.

We strongly recommend meeting with a Co-op Coordinator and your academic advisor to plan how co-op fits into your degree progression.

Students may request permission to take a maximum of one course per term (up to 3 credits; or 4 credits for approved EECS courses), in addition to the Co-op Work Term Course and any required faculty specific Professional Development Co-op Course

The course must:

  • Not interfere with standard work hours (Monday鈥揊riday, 8:00 a.m.鈥5:00 p.m.), even if working remotely or in a hybrid role
  • Be fully online or scheduled outside of work hours (evenings or weekends)

Important: Project-based courses (e.g., ENG 4000, CIVL 4000, EECS 4088 or equivalent) are not permitted during a work term.

The Co-op experience is a full-time work commitment. During a work term, students are enrolled in co-op work term courses and are expected to focus on gaining professional experience and contributing effectively to their team. Pursuing a co-op means temporarily pausing academic studies to fully engage in the work term experience while also managing the required Co-op Work Term Course and any Faculty-specific Professional Development courses.

As such, students are strongly encouraged to limit additional academic commitments during their work term. Students may take a maximum of one course per term (up to 3 credits, or 4 credits for approved EECS courses) and only with prior permission.

An approved co-op position must meet all CEWIL requirements for co-operative education.

To qualify, the role must:

  • Be full-time
  • Be paid (remunerated)
  • Be a minimum of 420 hours over a 12鈥16-week (4-month) work term
  • Be related to your career and learning goals

Always speak with a Co-op Coordinator if you are unsure about a role.

Students are encouraged to apply to positions they are qualified for and can demonstrate relevant skills in.

If you are unable to secure a position for your work term, do not worry鈥攖his is a common experience, as co-op is competitive and employment is not guaranteed.

Students are typically granted at least two search terms (semesters) to secure their first co-op work term before being exited from the program. If you believe you still meet the eligibility requirements to continue your participation in co-op, contact our team for a reassessment or attend Co-op Group Drop-ins

Yes. If a job posting states that applications must be submitted through both platforms, this is a mandatory requirement.

Following application instructions carefully is an important professional skill and demonstrates attention to detail鈥攁n expectation in the workplace.

Some employers also use this process to verify co-op enrolment. Failure to complete both applications may result in your application not being considered.

You should follow the instructions for each platform separately.

  • Submit the required documents on the Co-op Portal (e.g., resume and cover letter)
  • Submit the required documents on the employer鈥檚 website (e.g., resume and unofficial transcript)

Always ensure you are meeting the requirements of each application system independently.

We strongly recommend applying as early as possible.

Co-op positions are also open to students from other institutions, meaning competition can be significant. Applying early ensures your application is considered.

Yes. Please review the Co-op Fees page for information based on your Faculty.

Across Canada, co-op and internship programs typically include program fees. In the 91亚色 Co-op Program, these fees help support the administration, delivery, and continuous improvement of the co-op program.

  • Coordination and scheduling of interviews
  • Liaison support between students and employers
  • Employer and student evaluations
  • Resume reviews and career advising
  • Enhancing and maintaining a smooth co-op experience

The Co-op & Career Centre provides EmpowerAbility Support for Your Co-op Journey

Are you a student with a disability? If you have questions about workplace accommodations, your rights as an employee or navigating the application and interview process, support is available through the EmpowerAbility program. You can book a dedicated time to discuss your specific needs, explore your options and plan your approach with confidence. Students with a learning, mental health, physical, sensory or medical disability are strongly encouraged to register with 91亚色鈥檚 as early as possible. SAS can help determine appropriate academic accommodations and provide guidance on workplace-related supports.

If you require accommodations in your co-op or internship workplace, whether related to a disability or under other grounds covered by the Ontario Human Rights Code, you are responsible for communicating with your employer in a timely manner to determine appropriate arrangements.

We recommend booking a 1:1 appointment with the Manager, EmpowerAbility Program 鈥 a disability specialist 鈥 and connecting with a Co-op Coordinator if you have any questions. Additional guidance is also available through the Student Accessibility Services website.

The Co-op Team can support you with general questions related to accommodation processes (outside of disability-specific planning), while SAS can provide specialized guidance on disability-related accommodations.

We strongly encourage students with disabilities to register with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) to access available supports and ensure appropriate accommodations are in place.

Our goal is to ensure that all eligible students have equitable access to the Co-op Program.

For students registered with SAS, full-time course load requirements are adjusted in accordance with 91亚色 guidelines for students with permanent disabilities. This is typically defined as a minimum of 40% course load (at least 6 credits per term).

The Co-op Program is open to both international and domestic students. Do I need a co-op work permit?

On April 1, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the rules applicable to international students who wish to participate in university approved student work placements, commonly referred to as "co-ops" or "internships".

To be eligible, international students must be registered in 91亚色's Co-op Program and hold a valid study permit that includes the condition that says you're allowed to work "on campus". With this condition, work placements can be obtained on or off campus. A separate co-op work permit is not required.  For more information, visit the , or contact the International Student Advising and Immigration Specialist Team.

Please note that Co-op Coordinators are not authorized immigration representatives under Section 91 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. As such, they cannot provide immigration advice, complete or submit applications, or communicate with IRCC on your behalf.
